Summary: Log opened at 0001 hours 13 May 1969. Unit locations: At LZ Oasis grid ZA117277; Battalion Headquarters (Forward), 1/35th Command post is at LZ Oasis ZA117277; A Company (-) at ZA982285; B Company at ZA087627; C Company at ZA025194; D Company at YA986216; Recon platoon at ZA062607; 4.2 mortar platoon YA982285; Headquarters and Headquarters Company Support (S-4 Forward) at LZ Oasis; At Base Camp (Camp Enari); Battalion Headquarters (Rear).

At 0010 hours on 13 May 69 2/9 TOC passed the following to S3 1/35th: In reference to people of the Rock Quarry: C 2/9 fired 364 HE and 10 firecracker rounds; D 5/16 fired 70 HE and 70 firecracker rounds. Spooky is now on station, moral of troops is high. Earlier this evening the Rock Quarry had some movement and C 2/9 fired some arty for them, they will also fire a night program for the Rock Quarry in grid square 0529. Some dud rounds at the Rock Quarry will be disposed of tomorrow. At 0805 hours on 13 May 69 B Company 1st platoon (Coordinate ZA089270 found 10 bunkers, overhead cover, had small dead logs and bushes and no earth, size was 2' x 3' x 4', also found were 25 75mm recoilless rifle canisters (OD colored) and 2 firing positions. At 0905 hours 13 May 69 C Company saw 4 men 100 meters away with weapons moving from south to northeast (vicinity ZA004205). B Company's 2nd platoon engaged them with small arms and M-79. The enemy fled to the northeast and B Company is now planning an artillery and mortar program. At 1750 hours on 13 May 69 B Company's 2nd platoon saw 3 men fully dressed in khaki uniforms, not armed and were located at (coordinate ZA104227) 300 meters due south. At 1920 hours A Company's 3d platoon in reference to B Company commander's question on enemy casualties: During the incoming period at the Rock Quarry last night, trip flares were set off by 2 individuals entering the perimeter; one was shot, he fell to the ground while the other got away. One hour later the one that was shot disappeared to the east side of the Rock Quarry perimeter. At 1913 hours on 13 May 69 B Company requested a Dust-Off for 5 enlisted men - 2 litter, 3 ambulatory category - urgent and ETA is 20 minutes. Dust-Off 36 had injuries due to friendly 81mm mortar fire. At 1945 hours on 13 May 69 B Company reported 2 additional casualties and for a total of 7 wounded and the Dust-Off is complete. At 2130 hours on 13 May 69 B Company reports that their 2nd platoon saw a man in the lead of an enemy element (ZA109245). The lead man was carrying a mortar tube larger than a 60mm mortar possibly an 82 but the Company was not sure and did not see any ammo.

0010 hours (C) 2/9 TOC to 1/35th TOC: Reference to people at the Rock Quarry: The 2/9 Co fired 364 HE, 10 FC; D Co 5/16 fired 70 HE, 70 FC; Spooky is now on station, moral of the troops is high, A Co 5/16 Rock Quarry has 3 wounded, no problems at present time, earlier this evening had some movement and C 2/9 Arty fired some arty for them, they will fire night program for them in grid square 0529, there are some dud rounds which they will take care of tomorrow.

0045 hours (C) From TOC to B Co: Have your medic SP4 Allen to come back to this location - he is going to A Co.

0105 hours (C) Cpt. Smith to A Co: He informed the Co to have 4 EM and Lt. Mahifry ready to go to the Rock Quarry tomorrow at 0700 hours.

0236 hours (U) DELAYED ENTRY - On 13 May 69 at 0230 hours 35B to fragment TOC wanted to know the situation at the Rock Quarry: Ans: Men thought they heard movement. One threw a frag, which set off a trip flare and a claymore. They saw a figure that looked like a man and fired on it. They do not know if the was wounded or not.

0800 hours (C) B Co to TOC: Our 80 element at ZA089270 found in this location 10 bunkers with small dead logs, bushes, no dirt for overhead cover. Size was 2' x 3' x 4', 25 75RR canisters OD color, 2 firing positions. All these were found within 20 to 30 meters of the location given. B Co says they could see the fixed wing pad from both locations of firing positions.

0905 hours (C) C Co spotted 4 individuals 100 meters with weapons moving northeast from south vicinity ZA004205. The 16 element employed small arms and M-79. Enemy fled to the northeast and the Co is planning Red Legs and light organics.

1055 hours (C) To C Co and Recon from S3: 1/10 Cav in vicinity of grid 0324 found foot prints of approximately 25 individuals moving south, southeast directions. About 25 individuals were barefooted and one had GI boots on. It is believed they have the MIA with them. An APR is following the trail at this time. Be alert for these individuals and use caution in planning any situation that may arise. The ARP should not move into or near your element. Be prepared to assist the ARP if they need help. Requires Recon, C Co QSL.

1150 hours (C) 1/10 Cav is in contact at coordinate ZA035242. Be alert for their supporting fires coming too close to your element. Also be alert and watch for VC/NVA running out of the area.

1750 hours (C) B Co spotted 3 individuals fully dressed in khakis, no weapons at ZA104227 moving in a southern direction 300 meters.

1840 hours (C) B Co 163 is moving to B/M and saw 8 to 10 individuals at ZA109245, approximately 150 meters moving east across the clearing. They took them under fire. 16 (-) is moving in to help at this time and will employ arty, 81mm.

1913 hours (C) B Co requested a Dust-Off for 5 EM; 2 litter, 3 ambulatory and urgent. ETA is 20 minutes and Dust-Off 36, had injuries due to friendly 81mm mortar.

1945 hours (C) Dust-Off for B Co 16 element is complete and 7 EM are reported as addition wounded 3 serious and 4 minor.

2130 hours (C) B Co to TOC: In ref to contact at ZA109245 the 163 element says they saw a man in the lead element of enemy carrying a mortar tube over his shoulder and was bigger than a 60mm. It could have possible been an 82mm but we were not sure and did not see any ammo.

2200 hours (C) B Co to TOC: Information on casualties: #33 Arroyo, Jose, shrapnel right cheek; #36 Berry, Calvin, shrapnel in arm; #89 McLaughlin, Don, burn in eye; #108 Shaffer, David, shrapnel in back; #145 Picariello, Ralph, shrapnel right arm, #132 Hawkins, Jimmy, shrapnel lower arm and left abdomen; #134 Kulick, John, shrapnel in upper right arm.
