Summary: Log opened at 0001 hours 13 October 1968. At 0940 hours the first lift of b Company off LZ Mary S enroute to LZ Joan. At lifts complete at 1100 hours. At 1115 hours Brigade requested one (1) platoon be put on standby for a C/A Northwest of our A/O. Element will be lifted by the 7/17 Cav if contact was made in that area. The 2nd platoon of A Company was put on standby. At 1140 hours C Company reported that a Cider (FAC) aircraft spotted one (1) NVA battalion at grid coordinates YA812068. The element was moving north, lost them from that location. Unit out of 1/35 A/O. A Battery 2/9 Artillery at LZ Virginia Lee fired on enemy location, rounds were on target. Negative assessment of damage. At 1355 hours the S5 team reported 84 Med Caps, 300 vitamin dosages at Plei Plouki and Plei Lap. At 1357 hours SRP team 1 from C Company reported finding a trail 2 days old at grid coordinates YA834113 running east to West. Reported this finding to Bde. At 1420 hours the Division G-3 informed D Company Commander of a minefield location YA769200. Mine composition: 196 M14\'s, 398 M16\'s and 148 M48\'s. B Engineer stated that bunkers should have timber on timber to construct bunkers instead of timbers on sand bags. Engineers at LZ Joan will cut the timber needed. AT 1430 hours SRP 10 found a trail located at grid YA808214. Trail running from East to West with definite boot prints indicating travel of six (6) persons heading east, approximately 7 days old. Another trail found by SRP team 5 at grid coordinate YA790236 used after approximately seven days old. At 1600 hours D Company reported finding 4 81mm Mortar rounds at grid YA813228. The rounds were destroyed in place. At 2115 hours there was a message from Brigade to the Battalion Commander LTC Buckner: There will be a II Corps briefing at the Oasis at 1000 hours 16 October 1968. This briefing for all Battalion Commanders. At 2245 hours a DELAYED ENTRY from the Bde S-3 to the Bn S-3 Major Royal: At 0800 hours 13 October 1068 4C 3/8 Infantry will be inserted at grid YA938364 and work East to grid YA950369, South to YA950360. They will have with them Engineer personnel, 1 mine detector team, 1 scout dog team and 1 MI team they will be looking and checking for a cache. 4C 3/8 Infantry will be on Brigade push 56.00, Call sign Foxtrot 9441 and Foxtrot 94C. 1/35 Infantry will have one (1) platoon on standby at 0800 hours on the airstrip, this for the initial phase of the operation. If not needed for the initial phase of the operation unit will be notified to have an element stand by at LZ Joan during the remainder of the operation. In the event 3/8 Infantry makes contact platoon will be inserted and have the remainder of the Company (A Company 1/35) prepared to be inserted. Entire element will come under the control of Battalion Commander LTC Buckner (1/35).
