We were operating on the coastal plains around Duc Pho. During the day we patrolled in platoon size units and then we hooked up in the late afternoon with the other platoons of the company for night perimeter defense. Our location that night was on a small hill overlooking the South China Sea. After setting up our position with trip flares and claymores, we started to clean our weapons and talk about how we spent our 4th of July back home, while growing up. Just as twilight was turning to dark, we heard an Artillery fire mission starting. But this time nobody was in trouble. They were shooting parachute flares out over the ocean and, air burst artillery. It was like a Grand Finale and we all hollered and cheered. It helped us with our home-sickness and now every 4th of July, I think back to that night on the hill.
