4.2 mortar platoon LZ Oasis
Summary: Log opened at 0001 hours 3 May 1969. Unit locations: At LZ Oasis grid ZA117277; Battalion Headquarters (Forward), A Company at AR773053; B Company (-) at ZA238088; C Company (-) at ZA235043; D Company (-) at ZA246051; Recon platoon at ZA149219; 4.2 mortar platoon at LZ Oasis; Headquarters and Headquarters Company Support (S-4 Forward) at LZ Oasis; At Base Camp (Camp Enari); Battalion Headquarters (Rear).
At 0936 hours on 3 May 69 B Company's 63 element found 2 traps with arrow poles and arrowheads. They checked 4 trails running north to south of no recent use and about 4 months old. They found 1 more trap of the same type about 50 meters north of the others and this one did not have an arrowhead on the pole. As soon as the 63 element gets back to its CP they will send a diagram of that trap. Location of trails and traps is ZA235088. At 1055 hours on 3 May 69 B Company's 61 element found 5 hooch's and 2 of them were new, 1 was being made, 2 were of medium age and of size 4 x 6. Inside they found 50 lbs. of rice and 50lbs. of corn. At 1103 hours on 3 May 69 C Company at location ZA243065 found a tunnel complex of 20 caves. Size of caves was 3' x 5' x 5' and entrance was 3' by 2' in diameter. They were about 2 months old and were not used. Water holes nearby the caves were dug into the side of the hill not shown on the maps. At 1335 hours on 3 May 69 B Company found 1 bunker 6 x 4 x 6 deep and no overhead cover, no recent use. They found 2 glass jars, 1, 2 and 3-gallon jars at location ZA226084. At 1200 hours on 3 May 69 the 3rd platoon of D Company found 2 sleeping hooch's and one spider hole vicinity ZA228079. Hooch's were approximately 12' by 20' and 4' high containing sleeping mats and holding 10 persons in the prone position. (10 accommodated) Age of them was unknown and also found was a pile of ashes from a wood fire, bundle of punji stakes, pieces of bamboo 2" in diameter with illegible charcoal handwriting. An 18" spider hole was also found in the same vicinity, no recent use. Approximately 150 meters northwest and on the west side of the river 3 tunnels 5 feet lone were found and the entrances were 2 feet in diameter. One contained a Montagnard type jug, another 15 pounds of loose unpolished rice, the third was collapsed. On the west side of the river one more hooch 4' by 6' was found in a cultivated area containing one crossbow. Next to the river were one US pistol belt (new) with one worn and old canteen cover, canteen, M-26 had frag grenade attached to the pistol belt. At 1305 hours on 3 may 69 B Company 63 element found 20 rice hooch's 4 x 6 with woven mats, bamboo at ZA225090. They also found hooch's at ZA225093. 63, 632 are keeping it under surveillance.
1695 hours (C) At 1605 hours B Co found a cave (5' by 7') by the river containing 2 baskets, 1 wool blanket, 3 pair shorts, 1 khaki hat, 1 pair of Ho Chi Minh sandals, 1 US pistol belt, 2 cooking pots, 5 US canteens (4 plastic and one metal), 2 US canteen cups, 2 pieces of plastic, 1 small bag of salt, 1 small bag of seasoning, 1 US match container, 20 lbs. of rice. Equipment was destroyed.
1745 hours (C) From TOC to all elements: The XO has taken over command of the 1/35th as of 1740 hours.
