Summary: Log opened at 0001 hours 17 October 1968. Unit locations: At LZ Joan YA842251, Battalion Headquarters (Forward), A Company 1/35, B Company 1/35, B Battery 1/92 Artillery, C Battery 7/15 Artillery, 4.2" Mortar Platoon 1/35 Inf (-), counter mortar section 2/9 artillery; At LZ Jean YA809232 D Company 1/35, Recon Platoon 1/35, C Battery 2/9 Artillery, 1 CSF (Camp Strike Force) platoon from the Special Forces Camp at Duc Co; At LZ Virginia Lee YA841091; C Company 1/35, A Battery 2/9 Artillery, 2 CSF platoons from the Special Forces Camp at Duc Co; At LZ Oasis; Headquarters and Headquarters Company Support (S-4 Forward); At Base Camp (Camp Enari); Battalion Headquarters (rear), E Company (-), 4.2 Mortar Platoon section for security. From 0001 hours to 1359 hours no significant activities occurred in our area of operation. At 1350 hours SRP team 5 from D Company reported finding 60-70 1-man foxholes at grid YA796225. The foxholes did not have overhead cover. They also found fish and rice bags. The rice bags had American and Vietnamese writing on it. At 1440 hours the S-3 informed D Company that the Recon platoon would depart LZ Jean at 0800 hours 18 October 1968 enroute to LZ Joan. Recon will provide security for the 175 battery 7/15 artillery. At 2130 hours the S-3 signaled for a practice alert for all the units at LZ Joan to test the reaction of units should a sudden ground attack take place. The test was conducted in three phases. Gray was alert, yellow was attack possible red is an actual ground attack. All the units were inspected by the Battalion staff. The practice alert ended at 2202 hours. At 2210 hours we received a message from Bde: The Bde CO Colonel McCellan and General McCallister will visit LA Joan at approximately 1400 hours 18 October 1968.
