Chuck Rothlisberger sent the following account to Bob Kleinknight:
I am Chuck Rothlisberger, and was the captain who told you to take Hill 691 that fateful day - September 13, 1968 (Friday the 13th). I spent more than 24 years in the Army, retiring in 1987, and that day is indelibly etched in my memory.
You were in the 2d platoon. Your platoon leader that day was Wayne Winklekotter, a Mormon from Utah, as you remembered. You might also remember SFC Willie Bryant, who took over the platoon when Wayne was wounded - also by friendly fire, as I recall. Believe it was gunships that rolled in to give us close air support when we were attacked that morning.
We actually were supposed to move to Hill 691 the evening before. I thought that\'s where we were, and we started digging in for the night about 3:00pm. When we figured out that we were one hill short of that, battalion requested that we move on over to Hill 691. We managed to talk them out of it, and said that we would move there first thing the morning of the 13th. I often wonder how much worse it could have been had we run into that force at the end of a day!! We moved out at 7:15 that morning, made contact and had 2 company RTOs hit by 8:24. We finally broke contact about 1:00pm.
Our battalion commander, LTC (later Major General) Bill Moore gave us great support that day - let us fight and kept the artillery and gun ships coming. Many painful memories from that day. You asked if SGT Gambotto\'s body was recovered. We recovered all our killed and wounded, although one soldier was missing initially. Looking over the battalion report for the day, we had 3 killed and 24 wounded. All medevacs were completed by 4:00pm. The next day we pulled back and B-52 arc light was brought in. Another company went in for damage assessment, and we went elsewhere. What a month!!
