The cause of death was listed as KIA. At the time of his death Charles was 17 years of age. He was from Rome, New York. Charles' Military Occupation Specialty was 4812-Heavy Weapons Infantryman.

He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy near Masan at the southwest corner of the Pusan Perimeter in South Korea on September 19, 1950. For his leadership and valor, Private First Class Bird was awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
