"Artillery caught us in the open of a wide, dried-up creek. Four of us were running for cover when by instinct I hit the ground, flat-out. The other three did not and were killed. Although we were part of the same rifle squad, I did not know their full names. One, who was our squad leader, was Tony. (Anthony T Iskierka) Anothers name was Jonesy (Roy Vernon Jones), who was soon to rotate home. The other's name was Smitty (Marvin W Smith) who was a replacement with me. What sticks in my mind is that the night before he died, Tony had me buddy-up with him. Tony told me that he was a father of a new born baby. Jonesy was very upbeat because he was soon to rotate home. Smitty had this little phrase he would us a lot, "There you go!""
