The cause of death was listed as KIA. At the time of his death James was 19 years of age. He was from Ukiah, California. James' Military Occupation Specialty was 4745-Light Weapons Infantryman.

He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on September 2, 1950. Private First Class Saunders was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

He was known as "Jim." Son of George Marvin and Thelma (Velma) Saunders. He was originally from Colorado. His family moved to Ukiah, California, where he attended Ukiah Union High School.
