The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, PFC Wilfred Y.W. Chun, RA10103462, who died in the service of his country on July 31st, 1950 in South Korea. The cause of death was listed as MIA to KIA. At the time of his death Wilfred was 21 years of age. He was from Honolulu, Hawaii. Wilfred's Military Occupation Specialty was 62c-Food Service Apprentice.

The decorations earned by PFC Wilfred Y.W. Chun include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Korea Service Medal, and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Private First Class Chun was a member of the 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division. He was Killed in Action while fighting the enemy in South Korea on July 31, 1950. Private First Class Chun was awarded the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantrymans Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

Letter from Nick Chun, July 27, 2001:
Met Nick Nishimoto (unofficial Hawaii Veteran Korean War Coordinator) on some historical data about my brother Wilfred Y. W. Chun killed in Korea War on Jul 31, 1950 as PFC 35th Inf., 25th Inf Div buried at Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific RA 10-103-462.
Nishimoto knew Wilfred when they left for Japan 3/49 first at Camp Zama 8 days, then to Otau outside of Kyoto near Lake Buiwa. They went to Yoko hama for infantry training.
Korea War started June 25, 1950. They were one of first group sent going from Kyoto to Kokura (8 days) then to Pusan, Korea, then to Taejon where Wilfred was battling the NO. Koreans in So. Korea. U.S. troops had 2 Div. against 10 of enemy. Wilfred was exhaused physically and couldnt retreat to escape. Nishimoto was captured at Unsan N. Korea Nove 27, 1950 when B-Company was surrounded by Chinese troops 3AM in very cold weaher and marched 8 days to Pyoktong near China border. About 60% of troop Company was captured. 25% killed and 15% wounded in this battle. Nishimoto was a Prisoner of War for 33 months till 8/11/53...he said Chinese captors not as brutal as No. Koreans...
