"East Madison has suffered but one comabt death in all wars fought by the United States. That town's lone casualty is Joseph Quirion, who died at 19 in Vietnam. When it happened back in 1968, townspeople erected a flapole and marker of stone and brass in the center of their small village. To this day, residents of the village place a wreath on the monument."

"He was a quiet and unassuming young man", recalls Alec Richard, a retired principal from Madison High School who spoke at ceremonies dedicating the monument.
