The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, 1LT Samuel Frederick Ankney, who died in the service of his country on September 24th, 1968 in Quang Duc Province, Vietnam. The cause of death was listed as Small Arms/AW. At the time of his death Samuel was 21 years of age. He was from Flint, Michigan. Samuel is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Panel 42W, Line 8.

The decorations earned by 1LT Samuel Frederick Ankney include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.

Never forgotten after all these years
I served with 2nd Lt Ankney in Fort Hood Tx with the 2nd Armored Div. Sam was a platoon leader as I was. The CO was 2nd Lt Edward Maher from NJ. The three of us were good friends. Since I was the only married guy Sam and Ed had dinner at my house at least once a week. Both were decent and wonderful people. Ed also died in Vietnam. See my comment on his name. I was wounded and retired for wounds as CPT. If any one reads this and knows me please contact me. I have never forgotten the two of them.

classmate and teammate
We went to junior high school together in Flint. We were friends starting in the eighth grade, and usually sat together since our last names started with an "A" and a "B". We also played on the same junior high baseball team, and against each other in high school. Sam was a genuinely nice guy. He was fun to be around, and a good student. I know that those of us who knew him mourned his untimely death.
