The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, SP4 Henry Robert Matthews, who died in the service of his country on March 21st, 1967 in Kontum Province, Vietnam. The cause of death was listed as Grenades. At the time of his death Henry was 21 years of age. He was from Cameron, North Carolina. Henry is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Panel 17E, Line 8.
The decorations earned by SP4 Henry Robert Matthews include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star with V, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.

Sp4 Henry Robert Matthews of Carthage died March 21 in Vietnam of wounds received in action when he was struck by fragments of an enemy grenade, the Army has informed his mother, Mrs. Jesse Matthews of Carthage.
Sp4 Matthews had been in the Army since January 1966 and in Vietnam seven months when he died. He was a 1964 graduate of Pickney High School of Carthage and was active in the youth program of Red Hill Baptist Church before entering the service. He was a native of the Cameron area. His father was the late Jethro Matthews Sr.
Surviving Sp4 Matthews besides his mother are four sisters; Mrs. Joan Pate, Miss Bernice Matthews, Mrs. Yvonne Williams of Detroit, and Miss Mildred Matthews. One brother, Jethro Matthews Jr. Grandmothers Mrs. Anne Morrison and Mrs. Katie Ferguson.
The funeral services and burial will be at Red Hill Baptist church with full military rites.
