The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, SP4 John Lamuel Hymes, who died in the service of his country on August 20th, 1966 in Pleiku Province, Vietnam. The cause of death was listed as Small Arms/AW. At the time of his death John was 23 years of age. He was from Plaquemine, Louisiana. John is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Panel 10E, Line 21.
The decorations earned by SP4 John Lamuel Hymes include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.
John is buried in HOMESTEAD CEMETERY, PLAQUEMINE, LA
ON 20 August 1966 we lost John Hymes He was a close friend of mind an I wanted to let the rest of you know how were John was killed we were on a S/D coming north from the idrang along the border we reach Hwy 19 West of Pleiku at appox 1300 hrs we made contact John was pointman an was killed instantly we were on the south side of Hwy 19 west of Pleiku were it was still a dirt road we could not move an out of no were came two M48 Tanks shooting Bee Hive rounds to the north side of the road at that time the NVA broke contact an cross the border we swept the area but only found blood trails so time during the fire fight someone got up and covered John with his poncho liner. Do not remember who it was John you are sill missed after all this time God Bless Frank
