The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, SGT Eugene Spencer, who died in the service of his country on October 31st, 1968 in Quang Duc Province, Vietnam. The cause of death was listed as Small Arms/AW. At the time of his death Eugene was 23 years of age. He was from Bellevue, Kentucky. Eugene is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Panel 40W, Line 68.

The decorations earned by SGT Eugene Spencer include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star with V, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.

Eugene is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate, KY. Besides the BSV, Eugene was also awarded an ARCOM w/ "V".

When Gene and Mary Spencer met in Honolulu last September, there was one subject they hated to discuss but had to. That was Gene's involvement in the Vietnam War where he already had won the Bronze Star. "He was proud of the boys under him," said Mary Spencer as she recalled the four wonderful days with her soldier husband during R and R at Waikiki Beach. Sgt. E5 Eugene Spencer, 23, was called into Army service on May 2, 1967. Last April he was sent to Vietnam. A 1965 graduate of Dayton, KY high school, he had met and married brown-haired Mary Gramer while he was still in school. She attended Our Lady of Providence. Gene was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn R Spencer of Dayton. Mr. Spencer works for Rubel Bakery. Mary is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Gramer, Bellevue, KY. She is a key punch operator with Bardes Corporation, Cincinnati. Gene was the 20th Vietnam death from Campbell County and northern Kentucky's 75th. Other survivors include his maternal grandfather Malen Holliday; and paternal grandmother Mrs. Rhoda Spencer. Also, one brother; John A Spencer of Dayton and three sisters; Mrs. Carolyn Booth, Cincinnati; Mrs. Lois Marlow, Dayton; and Miss Jo Ann Spencer, Dayton.

In Feb 2000, I made my pilgrimage to see Sgt Spencer's name on the Wall..to touch his name..to say hi to him. I was his platoon leader, I 'gave' him my R and R in Hawaii so he could see his wife. Really miss him..tom kite..bravo 16 CKite@aol.com
