The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, SP4 Wayne Lee Evitt, who died in the service of his country on June 20th, 1966 in Pleiku Province, Vietnam. The cause of death was listed as Small Arms/AW. At the time of his death Wayne was 21 years of age. He was from Fitzgerald, Georgia. Wayne is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Panel 8E, Line 66.

The decorations earned by SP4 Wayne Lee Evitt include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.

The war in Vietnam struckits first tragic blow to the community this week by taking the life of SP-4 Wayne Lee Evitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Evitt of W. Roanoke extension. The Evitts received word Tuesday afternoon that their son gave his life for his country June 20.

A telegram received Tuesday at 5:30 p. m. from Maj. Gen. J. C. Lambert, adjutant general read: "The Secretary of the Army has asked me to express his deep regret that your son, Specialist Fourth Class Wayne L. Evitt died in Vietnam June 20 as a result of gunshot wounds received in combat operations against hostile forces. Please accept my deepest sympathy . . ."

A native of Fitzgerald, the 21-year-old youth entered the Army April 6, 1965. He was transferred to Vietnam from Hawaii in January of this year.

He was educated in the Fitzgerald public schools, having attended Fitzgerald High School and was associated with his father in the roofing business before entering the Army. He was assigned to Co. A, 2nd Bn., 35th Infantry, 3rd Bg., 25th Division.

Three brothers, W.D., Connie and Paul Evitt, all of Fitzgerald.
