The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, PFC Gerard Theodore Wolterman, who died in the service of his country on June 11th, 1968 in Kontum Province, Vietnam. The cause of death was listed as Friendly Fire (Mis-Directed Mortars). At the time of his death Gerard was 20 years of age. He was from Salt Lake City, Utah. Gerard is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Panel 58W, Line 30.

The decorations earned by PFC Gerard Theodore Wolterman include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.

Gerard was born in The Netherlands and moved to America with his family when he was nine years old. He was an accomplished drawer and likely would have gravitated toward being an artist/designer.Gerard is buried in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Salt Lake, Utah.

I graduated from Granite with Gerard. He was a good kid, and the typical All-American boy. I knew him since Jr. High days.

I knew Gerard in high school. He was a quiet reserved, well mannered individual. Our friendship blossomed during our high school years. I still have my yearbook in which he wrote: "Dennis, It's been real fun having you in jewelry and stage design. I hope that I will see you again - someday, somehow, and somewhere in the future (I hope). Well anyway stay the same as you are now. Take it easy with the women and stay out of trouble. A friend always, Gerard Wolterman - P.S. It's too bad that I couldn't take you along to Europe with me." Gerard & I parted and went our separate ways. I miss him and wish,indeed, I could have taken that trip to Europe with him that summer of 1967. I'm not even sure he got to go. I didn't learn about his death until much later. I didn't know,until I visited the memorial, that he died a year after we both graduated from high school. I salute you, Gerard. Thank you for everything we shared. You were a good friend and I miss you. Dennis.
