My Friend
Billy and I were in the Ground Surviellance Plt togeather in Hawaii. We volunteered for a tour as door gunners togeather in 1965. He went but I got into trouble and pulled from the program. He returned to the unit before christmas. We spent christmas on Waikaki togeather and left for Vietnam New Years Day 1966. We both had strong family ties in Oregon and we made real plans to attend college togeather. He was withen a few days of getting discharged from the army.the platoon was going on patrol: I went to the commander and told him how short Billy was.Billy didn't have to go: he insisted on going. He was the first soldier hit that day in the ambush. We had designated each other as escorts, but they wouldn't allow me to escort his body home: I'm white. I spent the rest of my adult life in the army trying to make a difference. Not a day goes by that I don't think of my friend Billy
