The 35th Infantry Regiment Association salutes our fallen brother, PFC Dennis Eugene Warne, who died in the service of his country on November 13th, 1967 in Quang Tin Province, Vietnam. The cause of death was listed as Recoilless Rifle Fire, Securing Downed Chopper. At the time of his death Dennis was 20 years of age. He was from Marion, Ohio. Dennis is honored on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Panel 29E, Line 93.
The decorations earned by PFC Dennis Eugene Warne include: the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Bronze Star with V, the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm Unit Citation.
Dennis was the oldest of three boys born to Maxine and Walter Warne. Mr. and Mrs. Warne raised their family in Marion, a small town in central Ohio. As a boy Dennis was interested in scouting and music. He was a member of the Harding High School orchestra. At home Dennis spent a lot of his time playing classical music on the piano and he got to be quite good. Dennis' father was a Mason and Dennis was a junior Mason. The family was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Dennis' father was a colonel in the reserve army corps of engineers. Dennis was fascinated with the army and respected the military from an early age. After high school Dennis attended college for a short time, then joined the army and volunteered to go to Viet Nam.
At the time of his death Dennis was survived by his mother and father, and his two younger brothers, Doug and Gary. As of Fall 2003 both Doug and Gary are still living and have fond memories of their brother that they have passed on to their children.
Dennis is buried in the Marion, OH City Cemetery

Reason: For heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam.
On 13 November 1967 Private First Class Warne distinguished himself while serving as a Rifleman in Company B, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry. Private First Class Platoon was airlifted into an area near Dong An, 200 meters away from where another American unit was engaged with North Vietnamese Army forces.The men dug in around the landing zone and waited for the arrival of another platoon. As the first helicopter carrying part of the second platoon was landing, it was hit by three recoilless rifle rounds and exploded.Private First Class Warne immediately left his position and ran to the helicopter to aid in the extraction and treatment of the wounded. While he was helping with the wounded, several more recoilless rifle rounds were fired at the ship and he received fatal fragmentation wounds. Private First Class Warne's valiant actions are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on himself, his unit and the Untied States ArmyAuthority:By direction of the President under the provisions of Executive Order
