3522. To all of you who served with the 35th, I say welcome home brother. I was with 2nd platoon B Co 3/8 4th Div from 09/68-03/69. Was at Vera when A Co was attached to us. Only 40 years later have I had the chance to see the maps of that area and remember. Bad place to be. I remember coming back to Vera after they moved us out the day before. Didn't even get off the truck before rounds started dropping. Bill Love B Co 3/8 68-69

3513. Back in October of last year I got an e-mail from my old buddy Bob Mitchell from Bellefontaine, OH. He is the sales manager for a car dealership. Mitch told me that he got to talking to a customer who comes in frequently and discovered that he was a Vietnam vet. The guys name was Ernest Richards but went by "Dan". Mitch had casually known Dan for years. He was surprised and tickled when Dan told him he served with the 35th Infantry. Mitch immediately took him back into the office and showed him our web site. Dan was interested but didn't own a computer. He was also battling cancer but said he would get his grandkids to show him the site later. Dan served with Charlie Co 2/35th from November 68 through November 69. Tonight Mitch reported to me that Dan passed away from his cancer on Sept 10. Another opportunity lost but another Cacti accounted for. For any of you who may of known Dan in country. Ernest "Dan" Richards (61) from Bellefontaine, OH Charlie Co (and LRRPS) Nov 68 - Nov 69 -- R.I.P.

3508. To mobs, the hidden hand of tyranny throws stolen bread from the back of a borrowed wagon; But the freeman buys produce from his neighbor's garden! Psalm 911-09 His foot plies red coral, winter gray, ageless tan, black volcanic or sunbright white sands; muds of fields, forests and deltas; stoney crags of mountains, canyons and headlands; from his family's shores he embarks. 3494. My name is Hoyt Mason[Gomer-Preacher]Viet Nam 'May'66-67 I would like to add to my recent post: I wish I could remember the LZ where this happened but unfortunatly I cannot. I do remember that it was Thanksgiving day, November '66.I was gunner on a 4.2 in. mortar. Our squad had been busy with fire missions much of the previous night. We were tired but anxiously awaiting a promised hot, Thanksgiving dinner which was to arrive by chopper at any moment. The Thanksgiving meal arrived along with a filming crew from CBS news. They did some filming as we continued our fire missions and consumed the long anticipated meal! A few weeks later I received word from my family back in the States that they had seen me [us] on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite!! If you were there that Thanksgiving Day, it sure would be good to talk to you at my email address:redeemed62@gmail.com

This year we had over 900 participants and a remarkable video of this three day event can now be viewed on YouTube. Go to YouTube.com and in the search box type, vvsd Stand Down. 3478. Reno is over and as are many others I am already looking forward to Pittsburgh. This year's reunion was outstanding! We owe an lot of people a lot of thanks for this. Doc Johnson as always came through with a great site and great coordination and communication with the hotel staff. I hope that everyone noticed that Doc doesn't just set these things up and then go sit down some place. He is constantly on the go and making sure that everything is working properly so that the rest of us can sit down and enjoy. Thanks Doc. Dave and Penni Grinde worked their rear ends off to assure that the rest of us could enjoy their city. We can never thank you enough. I wish I could even tell you all of the people who worked the registration table and the bar. Often times they sacrificed their own opportunities for socializing and visiting with old friends. Again, I wish I could name you all by name but I'll just have to settle for saying thanks to "all of you". I do know for a certainty that Don Rey worked as their coordinator and he did an heck of a job. We owe you a debt of gratitude Don. Job well done and we appreciate it. Steve Rainbolt operated under extremely difficult conditions to get those pictures that we all enjoy every year. The group photo's didn't work out well but this was through no fault of Steve's for certain. We all noticed that Steve was still busy working hard during the banquet while the rest of us were enjoying our meals and conversations. Thank you Steve! As always you are dedicated and professional and we appreciate this. And finally (and only finally because my frazzled mind is not thinking of the many others right now- I will regret this later) But finally, The color guard under jack Anderson deserves our undying gratitude. Without these dedicated guys our memorial program would be very empty indeed. You guys make the banquet do exactly what it is meant to do and that is to honor our old friends who are no longer with us. Thank all of you guys for your dedication and sacrifice so the rest of us can sit back and let the memories and the tears flow. We owe you all. Thanks to all who attended and all who wish that they could of been with us. See you next year in Pittsburgh. Doc Hall

3467. Greetings. It is with regret that I am unable to attend the Cacti reunion this year as much as I would like. My best made plans have gone to the wayside. I am reminded of the 1st Cacti Reunion in 1999 in Las Vegas that I attended as well as a few other reunions. The reunions were a convergence of memories, thoughts and feelings that honoured fallen mates and celebrated duty to country. It was a time to re-count experiences with those we endured our military obligation. I am sure the reunion this year will likewise be a reunion like years past-memorable. It is now 40 years onward for many of us on departing for VietNam; how time slips away. I again honour all our fallen mates. They are not forgotten and their time on earth too short. Regards to one and all; carry onward. Cacti Forever John Linn, B 2/35 '69-'70

3452. Cacti - Reno is quickly approaching, as is the business meeting with Officer/Board Of Director elections. This year all elective positions are open to be filled by willing individuals. In case you are unaware the elective offices of the 35th Infantry Regiment Association (CACTI) are: President, Executive Vice-President, Senior VP Membership/Legal Advisor, VP Membership, Senior VP WWII & Korea Affairs, VP WWII & Korea Affairs, Senior VP Public Relations, VP Information Services/Cacti Times Editor, VP Internet Communications, VP Special Projects, Secretary, Treasurer, and Sergeant-At-Arms. While the current BOD has been polled to ascertain their interest in either staying in their current position, or running for another position, all positions remain open for qualified candidates. All it takes to be qualified is the desire to help your Cacti Brothers; a willingness to sit on the board and help chart the course of the association for the next 2 years; and of course a paid up membership. If you want additional information email me and I'll try to answer your questions. If you want to be considered as a candidate, email me and I'll see that your name is put on the list of interested candidates, and we'll go from there. I'm asking all nominations be submitted to me or any other Nominating Committee memeber no later than 4 July 2009. This year your Nominating Committee is comprised fo myself, Bill Wilds and Rick Strawn. This is your chance to make a positive mark on this great organization of ours. Take arms!

We had nothing to do but go to the pool during the day and the club at night. Sure beat what we did for the rest of our tour once we did get to Pleiku. Once at Pleiku are group got split up but two of them, Russell Krill and Lonnie LeBombard (KIA on 9 Feb 68) were two that I remember. 3449. June 24,1966 early morning, our 1st 35th Recon Platoon was told to "check'em out". Bunkers we had discovered across an open area a couple hundred yards from us.We knocked out a outpost,I should say S/Sgt Damien Kaaihue did, by attacking & elimating the four NVA Bunker occupants. Then, all 25 or 30 men went online walking toward the Bunkers. Just inside the thin treeline. Where we "attacked" a NVA Regimental Holding area. We lost many of our Buddies that day. But by the Grace of GOD we were never overran.America is Blessed by GOD to produce men like those I served with in Recon. Ed Hill Recon 1st 35th 1965-66 Full writeup on Cacti website.

3446. 20 men died as the results of a ambush that took place on 3 july 1966. there has never been a day since then that i have not thought of the true hero's of the 3rd platoon, company B, 1st battalion, 35th infantry. a ambush that should not have happened. for some unknown reason this battle has all but removed from history. the truth of this battle will never be released as long as any of us are still alive. the question myself and others have been asking for years will never be answered. may all the men that was killed in action in a war that was never meant to be won from the very beginning, rest in peace.

3443. As I frequently do, just caught up on the Cacti Guestbook postings. I want to echo Bill's remarks about the latest edition of the Cacti Times. If you are reading this, you have the capability to receive the Times via electronic mail. John does a tremendous service for all of us and I am grateful for the news shared and updates on our active duty brothers. I encourage anyone not currently subscribed via your local computer to get connected. John also posted his remarks that our reunion is almost here. I know there are many of you that read this page and keep abreast of the Associations activities, yet have never attended a reunion. Whatever your reasons are, I hope you will reconsider this year. I have attended only two and they were both very memorable. Seeing old friends and showing each other photographs of grand-children, restored cars, fresh dug ponds, whatever was worth the trip. This year my BFF Dave Grinde and his lovely wife Penni are the hosts on the ground and that tells me it will be first class all the way. Trust me on this, you will be glad you made the trip to Reno. We are not getting any younger and our ranks are thinning at an alarming rate. Nuff said. Hope all had a very blessed Fathers day and please take a moment to remember those we owe the debt of being able to celebrate with our families this day. Cacti Lee

Our family is very proud of the man that Lt.Steven M. Gillmer was, and his memory lives on in our lives daily. Thank you to the CACTI for this wonderful book, and allowing us to express ourselves.. God Bless All of You!

3407. Hey brothers, I hope thios letter finds all of you well. Today is a day that will always be etched into my mind. On the 3rd of June 1968, I changed as many have before and after me. I was with "C" 1/35 as a new medic. I was with the 2nd platoon and my platoon leader was Lt. Steven Gilmer. I started the day as a green troop. By midnight I was a seasoned veteran. My brothers I would like to ask each and everyone of you to observe a moment of silence for fallen brothers: Steven Gilmer, Harry Butler, Ray Brockmeyer. I personally salute them. I would also like to salute all who are cacti. DOC

3406. I received the following e-mail from Greg Flewelling a cousin of our Vietnam KIA James Curry (D Co 1/35th KIA 4/1/69) Jim Curry was my cousin; I was almost 10 when Jimmy gave his life for our country. What I remember the most about Jimmy was his playing in the band in the cellar of my Aunt Charlotte's house on Falcon Street in East Boston . Years after his passing his brother Bobby successfully got the town of East Boston to dedicate the square at the end of Falcon Street in Jimmy name. I think about Jimmy from time to time and wonder what if; Every Memorial Day I take time to reflect on his life and the sacrifice he made. Today I saw Jimmy's name on the traveling wall in New Market NH and learned how to research his name at http://thewall-usa.com/info.asp?recid=11563 I have heard stories about how Jimmy died and know he received the Purple Heart. I was wondering if you knew any of the details and would be willing to share? I found the only picture I have of Jimmy and would like to share it with you. If anyone knew Jimmy Curry and can help Greg please contact me and I will put you in touch with Greg. Thanks- Doc Hall

3404. My regards and deepest sympathies to all families who lost their loved ones in the Vietnam War. I served with Company A Ist Bn. 35th Inf.,25th Inf. Div. 3rd Platoon, (3rd Herd) from Dec. 1965-Dec. 1966. We had various battles and skirmises during that year. The first battle March 15, 1966, I lost two members in my squad--Raymond Hood and Ignacio Huicochea-Reyna. Our next battle (the big one) LZ 10 Alpha, we lost-- Wallace Pilson,Sheldon Cohen, Walter Wetzel, Thomas Campbell, Richard Roundtree. Of these first five, three were from my squad. The next three were in A Company, I don't remember if they were in 3rd Platoon-- Billy Ray Patrick, John Barry, Sylvester Swinford. Later that year, from the 3rd Platoon(3rd Herd) we lost Gerald Toy on November 28th 1966. I also lost my squad leader while crossing a river during the year. If there are any family members or friends who would like to contact me, I would be glad to speak to you. I live in Phoenix,Az. 3396. Hey guys here's a question i havent been able to get an answer to I came home emergency leave on a c141 end of tet 68. plane was full of pallets of crates end to end up to the ceiling and the length of the plane . I asked the crew chief what was in the boxes he said empty ammo crates I'd seen a lot of ammo boxes but none like that, plane was so full there was no room to lay down so i climbed up on those empty ammo crates and slept hours and hours. when i climbed down the crew chief had a very wierd look on his face and said "did you have a good sleep?" i said "yeah" cause i did he still had that wierd look on his mug and shook his head and muttered "grunts" i thought he was talking about the engine noise i rode that plane to vandenberg and life went on but i never forgot that wierd look, and I didnt go back to the Nam Flash forward to about 1982 I'm fighting a bad case of undiagnosed ptsd and on tv news was video of mia remains coming back from vietnam and shit it was one of those "empty ammo crates". I knew in an instant end of tet, the very wierd look i never forgot, the bird stuffed full. There were no flags drapeing anything and the only honor guard was me blowing z's and oblivious to what I was sleeping on but can any one tell me how many coffins i slept so soundly on while escapeing hell with my life and two purple hearts. I hope everyone had a good memorial day thanks art hughes

3394. I got this today from an old buddy who served in the 173rd. I thought it good enough to share with you all. The Brotherhood..........."I now know why men who have been to war yearn to reunite. Not to tell stories or look at old pictures. Not to laugh or weep. Comrades gather because they long to be with the men who once acted at their best; Men who suffered and sacrificed, who were stripped of their humanity. I did not pick these men. They were delivered by fate and the military. But I know them in a way I know no other men. I have never given anyone such trust. They were willing to guard something more precious than my life. They would have carried my reputation, the memory of me. It was part of the bargain we all made, the reason we were so willing to die for one another. As long as I have my memory, I will think of them all, everyday. I am sure that when I leave this world, my last thought will be of my family and my comrades....Such good men." Author unknown.

3393. This post is dedicated to Rodney Kent Wunschel, B, 2/35th 1969. He lost an arm and was broken up badly bringing me ammo in an ambush off LZ Penny in May 69. I lost track of him completely (I could not even remember his first name) until I happened upon his story on a genealogical site looking for something else. I was so shocked by the story that I put him out of my mind again until I started thinking about today. I misplaced the original link and can no longer find anything other than the photo of his grave: http://iowagravestones.org/gs_view.php?id=98245 . The original story suggested that he suffered a lengthy rehab but never got over the injuries he suffered. May peace be with you Rod!

3391. A number of my friends and neighbors called me today to wish me a "Happy Memorial Day." I tactfully explained to each of them that there is nothing "Happy" about Memorial Day. To me it is a somber day of "Rememberance." So, enjoy your day off from work, don't eat too much of your grilled hamburgers. And if you wanted to, you could drink a warm beer to the guys on the KIA list and say thank you for your sacrifice. 3389. Comment: Saturday 5/23 I had the opportunity to go to Hoisington, Kansas to attend the funeral ceremony of 2nd Lt. Edward Schwartz. He was killed in action on November 28th 1950. His remains were just identified and returned home this last week. Doc. Hall asked me to go and represent the 35th Infantry Regiment. I was amazed at the support of the small town residents, and the family as they gathered to honor this fallen hero. It was a blessing to me to be able to witness this love and harmony that was so evident there at the graveside services. It was an official Military graveside service, conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard. 59 years later his remains were brought to rest in his home town of Kansas. The family finally got closure to this tragic event. Soon we will honor Cacti Schwartz on our KIA memorial page on our web site. This will be a Memorial Day that will be etched in everyone's mind that was present a this graveside service. I am thankful to have been present to witness this moving event. Alan Olsen (OLE)

3388. Being a former combat veteran of the 35th. Infantry Regiment from 1951-52 during the Korean WAR, it always brings back some sad memories of those members that were very close during times when your life depended on each other and knowing that so many are not here now but those memories will always remain and you can be thankful that you knew those that were so close, especially Reggie Mims from Monroe, Louisiana, who I stayed close with until the day he was no longer with us but went to our beloved savior. Thanks to all who may and have visted our guestbook and please continue to remember all those that gave their all so that those of us that are still here could remain free.

3387. On this Memorial Day, I would like to remember the brave men of Recon Platoon, Hq Co, 1st Bn 35th Inf who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of freedom so many years ago in the jungles of Vietnam. Major Raymond Johnson (Company Commander, Hq Co 1st Bn 35th Inf killed in helicopter crash after he made Major and was transferred to the 14th Inf) SSG Kenneth Kaaihue (Recon)SP4 Gary Edwards (Recon) Sgt Bob Kinney (Recon) SSG Ronald Kent (Recon) SSG James Haugh (Recon killed on his 2nd tour in 1968 with the 101st.) There are others who gave their lives also from Recon but time has clouded my memory as to recalling all their names but they are not forgotten. I remember the guys in my squad who are still living today also. Bill Carpenter (Teddy Bear)Freeman Mimbs Jr. (Junior), Oscar Whatley, (Gunner) Ron Ray ( my RTO who didn't know how to operate a PRC 25 when he came to the squad LOL) and Johnny Maddox. Captain John Fielding (S2 Officer who liked to go out with Recon for some strange reason, LOL) You guys are my heroes and I am very proud to have had the priviledge of being your squad leader. I could count on all of you and never had to worry about you guys not doing your jobs or taking care of every one in the squad when the going got rough. I hope to see all of you in Reno in July. Especially those for my brothers from the 1st platoon. Doc, Sgt. Jack, Tom, Bob, Ed, Dick and 1-6, you're some of the guys who made it real and continue to do so. I have been with this BN for about two years now and am currently on my 2nd tour (as a "Cacti") to Iraq in our efforts to help their country stand alone. I have been serving for almost 18 years now and this BN has the tightest camaraderie by far in any of my past units. This website is also a testimony of that closeness of brotherhood. I just wanted to extend my gratitude to all of you who have served and continue to serve, and express my honor for being a fellow "Cacti" among all of you great people of which share a rich history being part of this organization. 3333. 3-31-2009 Ever since 1951 I have thought many many times of a good friend that lost his life in the Korean War. He was Anthony "Tony" Srok. I was living in Boyes Hot Springs, CA, about 50 miles north of San Francisco. As I recall it was the summer of 1950 that Tony's mom and dad purchased a piece of land very near my home and they started building a duplex to have someplace to go when they wanted to get out of San Francisco periodically. My buddies and I were about 16 and Tony was a few years older and I believe he was an only child. His mom and dad were very friendly people, foreign born I believe. My folks were also from across the pond, Sweden. My dad was a small town builder and helped the Srok's build their duplex. Tony was his mom and dad's greatest pride I am sure. He was a son who showed great respect for his folks and other adults. Tony fit right in with all the local guys and we spent many days and evenings chasing around and especially swimming in the local pool. Tony was an excellent diver as was one of our other buddies, Jack Bowen. I did most of the belly flops. After that summer we din't see Tony again and then sadly in the fall of 1951 his folks told us of their great loss. As kids we didn't realize what such a loss it must have been to them. Through the years I have never forgotten Tony or his folks. I enlisted in the USAF in July of 1952 and served four years, thus I have numerous memories of the Korean War. In summary, Tony has not been forgotten and will always live in our memories of a staight up son, a good friend, and a very fine human being. I am now 75 years old and I guess just by living this long I can look back over many years of history and am entitled to a heavy heart thinking of fellas like Tony and so many others that sacrificed everything for our great nation. To all of them my hats off and a special prayer on my lips for all of them. If anyone reads this blog and knew Tony it would bring me a great deal of joy to hear from them, even just a note saying they knew and served with Tony.

3322. I just got home from spending parts of the last three days attempting to adequately represent the 35th Infantry Association at the services for Lt Daniel Hyde in Modesto, CA. Lt. Hyde as a platoon leader in A 2/35 was killed in Iraq on this past March 7 when his Humvee was hit by an RPG. American flags were flying all over Modesto and the flag of the Cacti Green was present at every service. Easily hundreds (probably into the thousands) of people showed up to the various services. As a somewhat peripheral member of the Association (I've been to three reunions) and someone who as a result of events in '67 and '68 as well as the life-long repercussions of those events has become at times more than a little unsocial, cynical, and numb, it was a powerful life-affirming but totally emotionally draining experience. I went expecting to show up to the services and express to the family the condolences of our association and then just go back to my regular life untouched. Instead I was very touched by the quality of the people I met. Lt. Hyde's family were amazingly strong and courageous people, who despite their own grief and loss spent hours and hours meeting and greeting and at times supporting the countless numbers of people touched by their son's life and death. It was easy to see why Daniel was such an outstanding person and soldier. The services and what those services communicated about the life of Lt. Hyde, the young people of this country, and the real core everyday bedrock people of our country was very powerful and affirming. It said that our country is in much better shape than most of the current news would have you believe. Glen Jenkins B 2/35 RVN 67-68

3320. I was only seven years old when my brother, Walter Earl Duncan, Jr. came home in the large crate I now preserve in storage. Unfortunately, I have so few memories of him, and even fell asleep at the memorial service so missed the final viewing. Our daddy, Walter E Duncan Sr. went to join his two sons in their Heavenly Home in July 2008. My mama, Mary, age 93, just left in February 2009 determined they were waiting for her. I appreciate greatly the archives that the Cacti website has on hand, and have researched for After Action Reports that he may have been part of. I would like to know anything more about Earl that anyone would know and care to share. A few years ago, a comrade in arms, Jack Frost, contacted my parents. They were so pleased to talk to him and gain firsthand knowledge. Perhaps he or others have recollections of Earl that could add to his life story that I could pass on to my four sons. Thanks.

3318. This morning as I look at the Cacti KIA deaths that occured on this date in history, I note that it includes Benjamin Lee IV. Benjamin was a medic from Oak Ridge, TN serving with the 1/35th and was killed by small arms fire on March 17, 1966. He is one of the few Vietnam KIA's for which we still do not have a photo for his Memorial Page. I've got to believe that someone out there has a photo of Benjamin. It may not be a photo of Benjamin by himself but that's OK. If you have him as part of a group photo and can point him out of the group we need this photo to complete our Memorial Page for him. 3316. 1st LT Daniel B. Hyde, an Alpha Co platoon leader, will have closed casket visitation at the Franklin and Downs McHenry Chapel, 1050 McHenry Ave., on Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. for Daniel Hyde, the 24-year-old Modesto Army lieutenant who was killed in Iraq on Saturday. The graveside service will be March 20 at 2 p.m. at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson. A memorial celebration of life will be held at First Baptist Church, 12th and M streets, on March 21 at 11 a.m. Remembrances can be sent to Thomas Downey High School for the Daniel B. Hyde Memorial Scholarship Fund, 1000 Coffee Road, Modesto 95355 "He wasn't the smartest guy or the best athlete, but he would work you underneath the table," Cole said. "He was the best leader you could ask for. He came into the huddle with a big smile on his face no matter the score." Isn't that the highest praise, really, to greet life's knockdown pitch with a grin and a line drive up the middle? Hyde's 24 years will be celebrated next week for those reasons. I had planned on coming to St. Louis back in July - and regret that I just couldn't make that happen. Today's the 40th anniversary of my dad's death, and we're remembering him and saying a special prayer or two. Stay well, all.

3289. I located your contact address on the Internet. One of my family members, Orlan G. (Gwenn) Cobb, was a member of the 35th Infantry Regiment in the Korean War. According to the records I have located so far he was KIA on May 7, 1953. Other information on the Internet says that the 25th Infantry Division returned to the lines on May 5, 1953, and was stationed at Munsan-Ni, overlooking the Panmunjeom corridor. I am inferring from that information that Gwenn was killed somewhere Munsan-Ni a couple of days after his unit was returned to the lines. I am seeking any information available about his death, about anyone who knew him, about the activities, location, and engagements of his unit, and any other information that can help provide insight into the death of one of our family members that resulted from action in the Korean War. Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide. Also, thanks to all of you who have served our country in its military service and helped to maintain the freedom we sometimes take for granted. Sincerely and respectfully, Douglas W. (Doug) Craig

3286. On February 16, 1968 the Cacti lost KIA SFC William Greenwell, 1/35 Delta 4th Platoon, to a mine. Every year at this time I think of Bill, our platoon and the men we served with. Memories aged not by time, but whose essence remains fresh and clear as so many of us can attest. Our lives interwoven by the brotherhood of combat not seperated by time, distance or thought. And so tonight I think of Bill and many others who lived, fought and died while at the tip of the spear so many decades ago. Honored and humbled to have been a part of it all, not knowing the why nor even caring now. Just happy to have survied and in my own small way giving back, making peace with it all and helping other veterans through there journey. Perhaps that's enough. I hope so. Good night Bill.

3282. I would like to try and put together a road trip to the reunion in Reno this year. Here is what I would like to do. Anyone living east of Oklahoma who is planning on driving to Reno please get in touch with me and let me know. We could meet in Oklahoma City at a predetermined time and location and then convoy together to Reno. I have the route already planned out and locations to stop for the evenings. It will take additional planning and coordination to make this happen but I think it would be a fun thing for a bunch of (old) Cacti soldiers to travel together. Kinda like going on a hunter/killer patrol again. LOL If you would be interested in this please let me know and we can start planning in detail how to get it off the ground. I would be more than happy to plan your trip from your location to Oklahoma City giving driving times and distances so that we could all meet within a given period of time to continue the trip. I would also like to pay a very special tribute to a very dear friend who lost his life in Vietnam in 1967. Sgt Robert Kinny from Canada. Bob and I were both squad leaders in Recon HHC 1/35 in 1966 and were very tight. I will never forget him I still grieve for his loss. Russell and Lonnie and myself were assigned to the 1st platoon, company C 1/35th. I think that there were 2 or 3 others from our Phillippine group was assigned to company C. I don't remember thier names. I was assigned as the RTO. Our Platoon Leader was 1LT Malenchek. I stayed in the 1st platoon for about 2 months and then moved to the company CP as and RTO. I don't remember the commander at that time but the 1SG was 1SG Birgman (KIA in Oct 67). While in the CP CPT Dave Collins came in and took over as the Company Commander. Latter Jerry Walling came in to the CP as an RTO and I left for NCO school at LZ Baldy and Pleiku. This was some time in Nov or Dec I think. When I came back to company C after NCO school I was assigned to the 4th platoon as a squad leader and stayed there until I rotated out in April 68. I took a lot of pictures but did not put names on them because I did not think I would forget those that I had spent so much time with. Since joining the Association I have heard from Dave Collins and Jerry Walling. I would like to hear from anybody that remembers me. Again my e-mail is steven0155@embarqmail.com

3238. I am still in shock. I am Rick Irwin's cousin. (My little brother Bill just wrote something here as well). Rick and I grew up together and were really more like brother and sister. He spent his last night in the US before going to 'Nam at my Mom and Dad's house. One of the last things he told me was that he'd be back and would still be surfing even when he was 50. I never knew anything about how he died, what he did, (radioman) or anything at all about how he survived in Vietnam up to that point. All he ever told us about was how badly he wanted to come home, how he hated the war and how bad the weather was. Thanks for telling his story. I am glad I finally know what happened.

As soon as I can get some decent pictures Ill try to send them up. A few members had expressed there willingness to help if we ended up needing anything once we deployed. We generally have everything we need but our SNIPER section does have a small list of things we havent been able to obtain through the usual means. Quite a few of them would help us to be safer and more effective. Some of these items are a little pricey so we have no expectations! 3218. The latest info from LTC Whitehurst in Iraq indicates that things are going well. The Cacti officially took over from 2-327 Infantry (No Slack) on 18 November and has the responsibility for the city of Samarra and the surrounding countryside. It will be a challenging assignment in that Samarra is the home of the Golden Mosque, one of the most revered Shia Islamic holy sites. The Golden Mosqu was destroyed in Feb 2006 by insurgents and it's destruction initiated a cycle of revenge killings that led to thousands of deaths. He says the violence has been reduced in Samarra thanks to the great work of the No Slack Battalion and the Government of Iraq is in the process of rebuilding the Mosque but tensions remain high. It will be an interesting challenge for the Cacti to ensure that the security remains on track. I'll provide more information as it becomes available. (J.L./Active Cacti Liaison)

3204. I dust off the following story almost every year at this time. I found it on the 4th Infantry Div web site a few years ago. The fellow who wrote it wasn't a Cacti but served along side many of us in Vietnam. Many of us have stories that are just as good as this but this gentleman expressed himself very well. I think it says a lot about who we were back then and also who we are today. I hope you enjoy my favorite Thanksgiving story:After the Battle of Dak To and after receiving replacements and resupply, our unit was moved into a firebase near Kontum in the Central Highlands a few days before Thanksgiving. We were advised that a full-blown Thanksgiving dinner would be brought out to us. Early that morning, a lone chopper approached and landed on the LZ. Out of it came several generals accompanied by our battalion commander, "Saber". When this much "brass" is around, you know something is up. We were ordered to pack-up our gear, as we were going to be making a CA into a "hot" LZ and once we secured a perimeter we would receive our hot chow. We moved out, and they were right. Partially right, the LZ was hot alright, not with NVA, but the small fires created by artillery and airstrikes. While some extinguished the fires, the others started digging-in. Once our positions were finished and the perimeter was secure, again a lone chopper approached our LZ and unloaded two mermite cans. One with turkey, the other mashed potatoes. They forgot not only all the trimmings, but also, paper plates to serve it on. As a "grunt", we didn't carry mess kits. As I walked the chow line with my hands out, one hand was filled with turkey, the other mashed potatoes. Then it began to rain. And rain like, only, you can get in the highlands. I had to hurry to eat the mashed potatoes before it ran through my fingers. What a Thanksgiving!!! And you know, I was thankful to receive it. Every Thanksgiving while I sit with family, I think of this time and am grateful. Grateful to my Lord and Savior for the sacrifice he made for us and to remember my Brothers who can only be there in spirit. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving to you all. 3199. Remember that Thanksgiving day 42 years ago. It fell on the 24th; just four days after Bravo 1-35 had been ambushed out near the Cambodian border. After the fight we continued to move north with occasional light contact. We needed a good holiday break but that was not the year we would have it. There also wasn't an LZ any where near us so the turkey, stuffing, mashed potatos and gravy would be delivered by air. I remember the mermites being kicked out of a chopper and falling through the triple canopy jungle; doing a great job of mixing everything together. As I recall, by the time we finally got it "dumped" on our paper plates it was cold and really didn't look all that great. Time changes many things but for me that was still one of the best Thanksgivings I've had. Guess its just a matter of perspective. For all who were there; it was a very thankful Thanksgiving.

3170. An earlier post thanked "the staff" of the Cacti Times for a great issue. I can't leave this unsaid. The poster was correct and "the staff" of the Cacti Times is large but mainly consists of John Lorts who does an outstanding job on each and every issue. The balance of "the staff" is each and every one of you who contributes a piece for John to include in the Times. Great job for all of you also. We sure would love to see more of you join "the staff". Don't hesitate to send your stories to John and be part of this great "staff". (You can contribute more than once. I'm sure that many of you still have great stories about every day life in the Army.) -- Doc Hall

3168. I would like to thank the staff for the Fall 2008 Cacti Times. I could not make this years reunion but this booklet was one of the best. Full of information from the reunion and other activities the active Cacti is involved in as well as the membership. I personally enjoyed the article by Don English. The Chu Pa operation and the walk all night to the Tea Plantation exercise. That put periods at the end of many questions I've had for 40 years. Keep up the great work. Hope to see you all in Reno.

3164. On Friday Oct 23rd the partial remains removed from the helicopter crash scene that took the lives of 10 Cacti Recon members and 4 helicopter crewmen in August 2007 were interred in Arlington Cemetery. Although each of these heroes was returned home to family for burial shortly after the accident there were partial remains that the Army was unable to attribute to any one of the 14 young men. These remains were interred in a single casket in the name of all 14 young men. The ceremony was solemn and absolutely astounding in it's pageantry. It was a special event even by Arlington standards. The Army arranged for family members of all of these soldiers to be present for the ceremonies. LTC Whitehurst (commander of the 2/35th Infantry) attended as well as 9 young Cacti who had served with and knew well these Cacti heroes. The services were also attended by many members of the military community at large as well as the Secretary of the Army and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Family members met with and were offered condolences by President Bush the day before the services. And I'm proud to say that Cacti members John Lorts, Ernest Correia and Tom Gragg were able to help me represent the Association at the services. It was, of course, a sad day but it was also a day and a ceremony that made all of us who witnessed it proud to be American. God Bless all of these young heroes. God Bless their Families. God Bless their comrades. And God Bless the entire Cacti community. Doc Hall

3163. If you subscribe to the printed version of the Cacti Times, it is on the way to your house. Expect delivery within the next two weeks, depending on where you live. This issue is our largest and I believe our best one yet as it contains a wrap-up from our St. Louis reunion, group photographs amd information about our active Cacti unit (which has just arrived in Kuwait on their way to Iraq). It also contains terrific stories covering our experiences in WWII, Korea and Vietnam that have been submitted by several of our members. Help keep our history alive! You are the only one who knows about YOUR Cacti experiences, so write them down and submit them to the Cacti Times. If accepted, they will be published and become a record of our history. If you're not a writer, don't worry about it, we will edit them for publication. The address to send them to is on page 2, I hope to hear from you.

I do have pictures of him in uniform, and will be contacting you to get one uploaded as soon as I can get it on my computer. Thank you so much for this website.

3159. Just saying hello to the men of Bravo 1/35. I wrota a poem that I've dedicated to Bravo Company, hope you all like it, I titled it:A TOUR OF DUTYSince I was a young boy I was alwas a big military fan,Saying when I grow up I plan on becoming a fighting man.Joining the Army I was trained to fight and I did very well,Then off to jump school where I survived 3 weeks of pure hell.Just wanting to do my part in helping to keep America free,I was sent to Viet-Nam, all the way to the South China sea.On a tour with B 1/35 of the 3rdBde, 25th Div. I served with pride,Our job while there was going after the enemy VC, leaving them nowhere to hide.Surviving my tour, I felt very lucky to be leaving there alive,Many of my friends were not so lucky, they did not survive. My friends who died, I visit them now in their final resting place,Still I'm having memories of that awful war that I just can't seem to erase.

3151. I've written another poem for the 35th Infantry, this is for the ones who could not make the reunion. A REUNION OF THE 35TH there's going to be a reunion of 35th Infantry members from the past, For the next four days we're planning on really having a blast. It is a gathering of friends and 3rd Brigade soldiers from years ago, Just being together we'll be telling war stories that will continue to grow. We'll be remembering combat missions where we were extremely brave, Working together and helping each other there weremany lives we would save. While here in St Louis we'll hold a solemn memorial for those we've laid to rest, Remembering them as our hero's, we've always considered them to be the best. Now as we are getting ready to depart, we'll all stand to give a loud cheer, Saying this reunion was a great success, now let's plan on where we'll be next year. I hope you all enjoy this poem I have several more I've written about the 35th Infantry, if anyone is interested in the poems, contact me I'll be glad to pass them on to you. Sincerly, Wayne D.(lucky) Lund, A former Cacti, and a comrade-in-arms.

3150. On Oct 24 a ceremony will be conducted at Arlington National Cemetery to inter partial remains recovered from the helicopter crash that occurred in August 2007 at Multaka, Iraq. The crash took the lives of 10 of our Cacti heroes as well as 4 helicopter crewmen. Remains for each of these men were returned to their families for burial. Unfortunately, it was not possible to identify some partial remains recovered from the crash site. As such, these remains will be interred at Arlington Oct 24th at 11 AM and the names of all 14 of the crash victims will be memorialized at this grave. A few of us Cacti will be in attendance to show our respect and to honor them and their families. Thus far John Lorts and I will definitely be in attendance and Ernest Correia and Tom Gragg have indicated a desire to join us. If you would like to join us please e-mail me at my address below and I will give you further information as we get it. Cacti Forever -- Doc Hall

He only remembers his nickname (Spider, maybe the last name of Johnson or Johnston). Does anyone remember Spider's name? My veteran thinks he was killed May or June of 70. Any information would truly be helpful. If anyone does contact me I will give this veteran your email, but he isn't here with me so can't give that out - don't have his permission.
