2515. September 29th is never an easy day. It's been
35 years since Bravo
2/35th went into the Chu Pa's and started to climb that hill. It's been 35
years since Tom Price and Duane Scott stopped growing old, and the rest of us
got older quicker than we wanted too. Say a little prayer for them...tell 'em
we miss 'em...and we'll see 'em again.
For those of us that were there - nothing more to say. For those who weren't
nothing more can say it.

anyone out there that can share their experience with my uncle. My father was a
medic in the Vietnam War and clams up when I ask him about his brother. So if you
can help please contact me, any small moment would be appreciated. I was born 2
months and 7 days after he died, so I never got to meet him. Everyone who knew,
except for my father, him said that I look like him and have his mannerism. My
mother died 4 1/2 yrs. ago and did'nt talk much about her brother in law. My
grandmother never talked about her son before her death in 2002. My uncle also has
a sister who does'nt speake about her brother either. I'll take any feed back neg

2294. John Lorts, our liaison to the Actives received
some interesting information this week which he relates as follows:
"I've been reliably informed that the Army has planned a web site or bulletin board for the families to stay in touch
with the troops. I would imagine that it is a way to help make sure that information, to include personal and
sensitive information, be kept as accurate and controlled as possible for security reasons. This site will be set up
for the 3rd BDE. Once we find out the information, we will post info about it on our web site. I hope our association
members will be able to use it to correspond with the Cacti troops as well. If so, we will post the link on our web
site. For the last deployment to Afghanistan, the Army did not have such a bulletin board so we set one up for 2-35.
Seems like that will not be necessary this time. But be assured that the 35th Infantry Regiment Association will be
supporting our Cacti troops and their families as much as possible."

been so extremely proud to be a Cacti. I was able to bring my older brother and my
oldest son to the reunion. They were treated with such love and an honest, sincere
welcome that, they were overwhelmed. They had no idea what to expect, just like many
of us at our first reunion. They knew only me and some names and pictures that I had
shared. You all are just precious. I thank you from the very bottom of my cacti
heart. (Pancho) Frank De LA Rosa, (KOOF)Harlan Kaufman , Mike Kerr, Larry Tefteller,

Gordon Gray, Ray Maylen, Jack Edwards, Ed Thomas, (TOP)Jack Farmer, Phil Landis. I
know I have left some people out but not intentionally. Brothers, I have listed
these names with pride and gratitude. My brother and son felt more welcome than they
ever had in their lives. This is because of my wonderful cacti brothers and their
wives. They are from 3-4 different companies, 2-3 different units, some former
officers, some former enlisted . The years that are spanned are from 1965-1970. My
older brother had many voids filled and questions answered. My oldest son was
absolutely mesmerized by the great group that I am so privilaged to be a part of. My
brother and my son are already missing the Cacti family and it has only been two
days, they are talking about next year just like I am. I was so proud also at the
airport in Phonix when I was waiting to fly home. A lady sitting across from me saw
the association patch on my cap and asked about the 25th insignia. Here husband
perked right up and asked what she was talking about. When I told him about the
association and the Korean Vets we had in attendance he just beamed because he was a
Korean vet. I told him I would give him the internet address of the sight and swish
I had an ink pen and paper in my hands. He was thrilled to know we have such a great
organization. He will undoubtedly be a new member. Thank all that make this
possible, you are special. To all my brothers, god bless you and see ya next year.

Welcome Home.
I got your email on the 35th Website.
I was hoping you would be at the reunion. I am finally going to go this year. I have known about it for 3 years. It is
hard to get the money and time to go. This year I decided I would just do it. Now we are hearing stories about snipers
around Phoenix, Arizona but I told my wife we would go anyway. I was going to take my vietnam pictures just to see if
anyone there remembers anybody.
The only person I have actually talked to is Gerald Solimine, our old squad leader. He lives in Massapequa, N.Y..
Ben Youman emailed me and said I should call him to see if he was the right Gerald Solimine from our vietnam group. I
had a great talk with him. I have been meaning to call him back but I keep putting it off. I have his phone number if
you need it.
I am sure he would love to talk to you. I was telling him he needed to start to apply for his vietnam benefits. He had
not done anything just like me. I finally got started and got a big 10% on my hearing and 10% PTS which gave me 20%.
Of course I feel cheated but at least it is a start. I am on a healthy vegetarian way of eating so I can live long
enough to get a little of what I deserve from good old Uncle Sam. I will probably have a couple of free steaks to give
away at the reunion. I am sure some of my cacti brothers will not let them go to waste.
I was sorry to hear about your wife.
I will talk to you later.

packing to attend the reunion in Scottsdale and I hope you are accompanied by your
wives. Jan and I will miss this one due to some untimely surgery she is recovering
from. I know you will have a "large" time and there will be many more memories to
cherish. I just want to echo Johns remarks (see line 2224 in this guestbook) and
encourage anyone that sees this in time to make plane reservations, get up and do
it!
My thoughts will be with all of you, especially those in Recon 2/35. Keep up the standards and make us all proud. A
finer group of men have never existed in any lifetime. A Cacti really is a special person.
A note to Don Johnson... you had to schedule a TPC on the year I couldn't attend. Hit it straight and keep it in the

Launches Web Site to Assist Soldiers and Veterans Whose Personal Data May Have Been
Affected By Recent VA Data Loss
June 29, 2006____The Department of the Army has activated a secure web site at https://ID-Theft.army.mil that will
enable current and former servicemembers to determine if their personal information was potentially compromised as a
result of the May 3 theft of a laptop from the Department of Veterans Affairs containing personal data on millions of
veterans.____The lost data includes identifying information (name, social security numbers and dates of birth) on as
many as 20 million veterans, including active and reserve-component servicemembers. No evidence currently indicates
that the data has been used illegally, but all Soldiers and former servicemembers should be extra vigilant regarding
their financial well-being.____When entering the Army's secure web site, Soldiers and veterans should enter all the
requested information (name, last four numbers of SSN, and date of birth) in the format specified to ensure a valid
response to your query. Those whose data has been compromised will be linked to the VA web site, which explains
recommended steps needed protect their credit.____For additional information on how to protect yourself from identity

be finalizing your plans to attend the Cacti reunion in Scottsdale. If you are on
the fence about going, let me assure you that if you decide to go, you will be very
happy that you spent 3 or 4 days with your brothers in arms. I can understand that
schedule, health or budget concerns can get in the way of attending one of our
reunions, but thinking that you are not ready yet, or that you don't want to be
around a bunch of guys talking about what heroes they were, you will be pleasantly
surprised to find out that our reunions are all about brotherhood, friendships made
and renewed, a celebration of our service and remembering those who gave the
ultimate sacrifice. We'll have good food, plenty of refreshments, great
accomodations, laughs and maybe a few tears. But best of all, a chance to see some
of those you served with so long ago. It means so much to me to once again be able
to shake hands with those that I walked the Central Highlands with back in 1966, and

Email 2198. Hi Guys,
I received the following query and have answered it copying Jim Anderson and Dave Muxo. Please contact Joel if you
have any information. His email is:joel.knutson@osan.af.mil
Mr. Arnold,
My uncle, Harold L. Erickson, was a member of a heavy machine gun platoon, Mike Company, 35th Infantry Regiment,
during the Korean War. He was reported as killed in action during fighting on Hill 717 on 7 Sept 1951. My parents
have provided his official military photo and would like it added to the 35th Infantry Regiment web site. How would
you like me to submit the photo?
My uncle's body was never recovered and this uncertainly weighed heavily on my grandmother's mind such that my uncle
was seldom discussed during her lifetime. All of his official files were destroyed in the St Louis fire so I am
attempting to recreate his official record. I only recently discovered his unit was awarded the Distinguished Unit
Citation for their actions on 6-8 Sept 1951. My parents were also recently provided the unit daily reports and a
hospital admission record from 11 Sept 1951 suggesting his body was processed through a hospital. I would like to
clarify if his body was actually ever recovered or if this was the method by which KIA/MIA were reported at that time.
Can you put me in touch with anyone that might be familiar with such information?
In reviewing the photos posted on the 35th Infantry Regiment web site, I am interested in the photographs from David
M. Williams. His photo of three service members of "L Co" may have a photo of my uncle (the "unknown"). Bill
Sizemore and my uncle were killed in the same battle on the same hill so it is quite likely they may have been
together for a photo. I have recently read letters my uncle wrote to his parents and he usually referred to his squad
members by their nicknames and seldom used their full names. My uncle indicated in his letters he was called "Tripod"
due to the fact he carried the tripod for his heavy weapons squad. My parents are interesting in contacting anyone
that may have served with my uncle from May, 1951, until his death on 7 Sept, 1951.

of Timothy Rexroat brings to mind a subject near and dear to my heart. I wish that
more of you guys would submit entries to the "Timeline" The experiences that all of
us had make up our history in their total. Your stories big and small mean a lot.
Please take the time to submit your perspective of a given day (or more) during your
tour to the "Timeline". I didn't know Timothy Rexroat but in the course of some
recent research I came across his name and the incident that injured him so badly.
A mortar round "still in it's cannister" prematurely exploded in a mortar pit. It
appears that Robert Worthen was carrying it. Charles Howze and Timothy Rexroat were
also in the pit. Curtis Frantz was sitting in front of his bunker cleaning his
rifle. Worthen, Howze and Frantz all died in the incident and Timothy Rexroat was
very badly injured with amputations of both legs. Others may of been injured but at
this time this is unknown. I'm sure that someone out there remembers this. If you
do then do this for all of us. Please write up the incident and post it on the
website's "Timeline" And all you other guys who have been through so much please
consider writing up your stories about particular days and sharing with us. Who
knows, there may be a family member like Timothy's stepdaugher out there who this
would mean so much to. Thanks --Doc

the graves of my Brother Spec 4 William Douglas (DOC)Wyant and my Dad William
Theodore Wyant and my little brother JOhn Christopher.both my DAD and Doug fought in
thr worst battles of their wars. My Dad made it back but he suffered from nightmares
alot so in a sense he never left it behind as many others from wars cant and
havent. And my big brother Doug the best brother in the wrold never came home to
us.Many years have passed and the tears and the emptiness still remains. Now there
are 2 that have left their mark on our hearts.John we never got to know as he died
shortly after birth. My heart aches so for the families from this war now .and unless
you have loss someone you cant understand the feeling that exists within someone and
the effect on their family and lives for all time. may God grace all of you and be
with you in your time of loss and know that others before you understand and care.
God Bless also the ones that serviced with my brother and my Dad.They were their
friends but most of all they became their family.

engineer assigned to you during the one-niner battle. At first he wasnt sure if he
would be able to attend (thought he had to be Infantry). After speaking with several
of you, he was assured he was welcome. I learned about the battle of one-niner first
hand from all of you. Thank you for that. I am a former Infantryman and have always
wondered about my fathers experience in Vietnam. He never much spoke of it, even
when asked. Just general referrals. After the reunion that changed. thank you for
that too. You guys are the best and you have touched our lives. Sorry I didnt place
this before but I just came across the website. I see the next reunion is in
Arizona. I will mention it to dad and maybe we could attend again.

see the Napalm falling from the plane that hit the CP with Capt. Maisano, Doc Hurst

burned, Doc Hurst and I shared a foxhole and hootch for awhile. I often wonder what
became of him. Am planning to visit the cemetary in Franklin Louisiana today to put

attended a Memorial Day Ceremony held in Lafayette La, put on by the Laf. VVA. they

Soucook Cemetery in Concord, NH where Ronald Olson (A Co. 2/35th; KIA 11/24/69) is
buried. His resting place is in a tiny, picture-perfect, New England cemetery. I
left a Cacti cemetery marker at the site. I served in C Co. 1/35th from Feb. 68 to
January 69 so I never met Ronald, but that did not matter to me. Doc had told me
that I would find such visits personally satisfying, and he is certainly right about
that. I heartily recommend it to all my Cacti comrades. If any of you served with
Ronald and would like a photo or two of the cemetery and his resting place, let me
know, and I will send it along. Take Care My Friends, Mac

was "A" Co., 2nd Bn., 35th Inf. & was killed on May 29, 1966 near Plei Ya Ya, Pleiku

paper had very little information other than he was killed in an ambush by NVA. We
had 4 servicemen from Folkston, GA to die in Vietnam & I'm placing articles in the
local paper on the 40th anniversary of each of their deaths. This will be my second
article & judging by the response to the first, many of our residents still remember
these young men & are interested in their stories. Any and all information on SGT
Peacock would be greatly appreciated.

I was captured and escaped on 27 November, 1950, and spent 14 days behind enemy lines, aided by a North Korean escaped

I have just published a 443 page book entitled "Escape from North Korea", available through trafford.com or 1-(888)

found it only recently and have been able to learn a little more about my fathers
military service. He passed away in 1994.
But I knew he had served with company f of the second battalion in combat in korea in 1950 and 1951. And although he
talked about some of it this has given me a new appreciation for the service he and his brothers in arms rendered to
the cause of freedom.

2014. When I was serving as a Director of the 25th
Infantry Division Assn. (1994-1997) I got a phone call from Ben Youmans inviting me
to Melbourne, Florida to meet with Ben and several others he had re-established
contact with who all were all from C/2/35th in 1967-68. Ben requested I bring any
copies of Orders I had from Viet Nam that might help locate others from the Cacti.
Ben said Shockey Mayle, Chick Aitchison, Larry Luscri, Bill Keller, and Ron Braun
would be there too. I was shocked. I remembered each of these guys. This would be
our first reunion since last seeing each other in Viet Nam almost 30 years ago. I
was excited then as much as I am now about the Scottsdale Reunion coming up this
July. Ben Youmans was an outstanding host. Ben arranged for the seven of us to
regroup at the Holiday Inn in Melbourne and participate as a group at the Florida
State Viet Nam Veterans Standdown in Melbourne. Ben's organizational skills,
energy, enthusiastic attitude and direction have significantly contributed to the
establishment of the 35th Infantry Regiment Association. Any Cacti past, present
and future, looking for another Brother Cacti from four theaters of war (WWII,
Korea, Viet Nam and Afghanistan) and peace time will now be able to connect through
the 35th Infantry Regiment Association. Ben's efforts activated/motivated many
highly skilled Brothers to help make everything from the Reunions, Web site,
History, KIA Project, Color Guard and the Association the success it is. I
personally want to thank you Ben for your contibutions and pray you can enjoy many
Cacti Reunions. Thank You Ben!!!

Starting in the Pre-Las Vegas days you were one of the major influences in bringing the Cacti together, and in keeping
us together. The Association has become what it is because of a few of you who believed so strongly you made it
happen. For all the time, efforts and love you expended in making this organization happen - a simple thanks doesn't
seem like enough. So, brother - from the bottom of my heart - Thanks for making it so. Forever Cacti...Cacti Forever.

the 4th Inf. guestbook in 1998 and immediately getting an e-mail from Ben welcoming
me home and asking me a million questions about C2/35 and the guys from his Platoon

would receive e-mails from him written in the wee hours of the morning. He never
failed to let me know about finding someone from C2/35 or the relatives of someone
we had lost. He had a very noticeable passion for the 35th Infantry Regiment and the
people associated with it(a trait that seems to be common among the leadership we
have and have had in the past). In closing, Thanks Buddy, for all your effort,

Someone had to pull security for the battalion, Charlie and Bravo drew the short

know it until we moved out the next day. I remember birds dropping off Christmas
packages along with resupply; listening to Christmas Carols on 6's PRC25; Chaplains

1936. Recon Plt, 3rd Bde, I say this now because in a
few days it will be very difficult to say or write. We are about 9 days from our
original departure time. This Dec 16th, will be 40 years since we last saw each
other as a team. We loaded the C-141s' enroute to Nam, at about 2am. We left Hawaii
as a team only to leave Nam as singles, because of various reasons, wia, sick etc.
Now 40 years later we wonder and pray that God will grant us one more day so that we
will be able to greet, hug and cry with each other. Times were hard, and times were
good to us. We survived because of the strong sense of God, Country and Recon. We
were trained to be the very best and by God we were/are the best, setting the pace
for others to follow or get out of the way. Those of Recon who are still here and
communicating with each other, Gator, Gunner, The Rick, Bennie, Jimbo, FX, and me,
we live so others will not suffer. We are still here for a purpose: to still serve
God and Country. 40 years now I never thought we would even remember one another,
when I talk with you Brothers, I cry for joy that we are able to do so. Maybe MEN
are not supposed to cry, but if I never said this to you guys, let me say it now,
"IT WAS A GREAT HONOR TO HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE SERVED WITH THE FINEST
RECON TEAM IN THE WORLD". Now I will be quiet............

bob -- ny USA -- 12/07/2005 1933. I wanted to share a poem of 9/11 that my son
Kaleb, wrote
when he was 16 yrs old,he wrote it a month later. He is now
in his third yr of college.
TODAY
ON SEPTEMBER 11TH AS LIKE TODAY
WE GOT IT THE WORST WAY
WITH FOUR PLANE CRASHES ON TH SAME DAY
AS THE NEW YORK NATIVES WITNESSED IN SURPRISE
THE TWIN TOWERS THAT ONCE STOOD SO HIGH
WITH THEIR EYES,SLOWLY WATCHED AS THEY WERE CUT DOWN TO SIZE
ONE CAN'T FORGET AS THE THIRD OF THE PLANES
CRASHED IN THE WEST WING OF A BUILDING OF FAME
IRONICALLY IN ALL OF THE DAYS IT COULD HAVE BEEN BUSTED
IT WAS ATTACKED ON THE DAY WHEN WE BEGAN ITS CONSTRUCTION
THEN WHEN THE DARING FEW TRIED TO HIJACK THE HIJACKED PLANE
GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR OTHERS, US...
INNOCENT LIVES LOST.TAKEN BY WAR
AN ON GOING WAR, THAT IS LIKE A COLD SORE
WE KNOW THAT IT'S THERE
BUT WE CAN'T QUITE GET RID OF IT
UNTIL SO MANY LIVES ARE LOST
THIS MAKES IT EVIDENT
QUICK ACTION IS TAKEN
WE NO LONGER KNOW NO HASTE
WHEN ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IN THE FIRST PLACE
WE POINT FINGERS AND PICK SOME ONE TO BLAME
BUT REALLY WE ARE DOING ALL OF THE SLAYING
FOR NOT LOVING ONE ANOTHER IS SURELY A SHAME
BUT OF COURSE THAT IS NOT THE CASE
ALL OF THIS IS PUT ON ONE MAN'S BACK
OSAMA BIN LADEN WHO ISSUED THE ATTACKS
TO FRIGHTEN OUR NATION INTO RETREAT
BUT ISN'T HE THE ONE HIDING IN FEAR
FEARING OF HIS DEATH SO NEAR
HE SAYS WE WON'T CATCH HIM...
WELL NOT ALIVE...
HE WOULD RATHER HAVE PRIDE IN COMMITTING SUICIDE
DON'T WORRY HIS TIME WILL COME
FOR NOE CAN ESCAPE JUDGEMENT FROM THE ONE
AND TO ALL THOSE WHO WERE VICTIMIZED
WE APOLOGIZE
ALL YOU CAN DO NOW IS KEEP ON PRAYING
PLEASE LISTEN TO WHAT I AM SAYING
TO OVERCOME THIS GREAT TRAGEDY
WE MUST BECOME ONE, A GREAT NATION SECOND TO NONE

all been addressed and are scheduled to go to the Post Office Monday, 5 December.
The issues go out by using "bulk mail", which is slower than First Class but a very
cost-efficient method for doing mass mailings. Hopefully you will receive your copy
(if you are a paid-up member!) in the next couple of weeks, longer for some areas.
With the increase in holiday mail, expect delays. If you would like to recieve an
electronic copy, contact Ben Youmans for the Cacti Times link on this web site. If
you have let your membership lapse, or if you have ever served with or are now
serving with the 35th Infantry Regiment and would like to join this outstanding

Email 1925. Reading Doc Hall's posting of Steve Edmund's
Thanksgiving story brought back some warm memories of my own. I was reminded of this
by a telephone message I received from Bill Hoelle on Thanksgiving day. I wish I had
been home to receice the call.
Bill reminded me of our Thanksgiving in 1968. B 1/35 was humping along the Cambodian border. We had crossed over the
river into Cambodia, and after awhile we took a break for lunch.
We set out security and cleared a small LZ. Then in came a single slick. They unloaded some containers of turkey,
mashed potatoes and, I think we got gravy. But like Ed, we had nothing to eat from or to serve with.
We opened some C-rations and used the boxes for plates. We served with some cheese and cracker cans that a couple of
the guys opened for that purpose.
The C.O. explained that, if all possible, every soldier gets a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving day.
I don't remember much else about that patrol, but we did have turkey on Thanksgiving.
My best wishes and prayers go out to all of you, especially our troops who are fighting to keep us safe as we are
fortunate enough to celebrate Christmas and the holidays.

35th Inf Reg Assoc 1912. A few years ago a gentleman by the name of
Steve Edmunds from the 3/8th Inf. posted a Vietnam Thankgiving story on the 4th Inf
Div. web site. It is my favorite Thanksgiving story and I think that some of you
might enjoy it on the eve of the holiday. Happy Thanksgiving to all. We all sure
have a lot to be thankful for. Story follows:
After the Battle of Dak To and after receiving replacements and resupply, our unit was moved into a firebase near
Kontum in the Central Highlands a few days before Thanksgiving. We were advised that a full-blown Thanksgiving dinner
would be brought out to us. Early that morning, a lone chopper approached and landed on the LZ. Out of it came several
generals accompanied by our battalion commander, "Saber". When this much "brass" is around, you know something is up.
We were ordered to pack-up our gear, as we were going to be making a CA into a "hot" LZ and once we secured a
perimeter we would receive our hot chow. We moved out, and they were right. Partially right, the LZ was hot alright,
not with NVA, but the small fires created by artillery and airstrikes. While some extinguished the fires, the others
started digging-in. Once our positions were finished and the perimeter was secure, again a lone chopper approached our
LZ and unloaded two mermite cans. One with turkey, the other mashed potatoes. They forgot not only all the trimmings,
but also, paper plates to serve it on. As a "grunt", we didn't carry mess kits. As I walked the chow line with my
hands out, one hand was filled with turkey, the other mashed potatoes. Then it began to rain. And rain like, only, you
can get in the highlands. I had to hurry to eat the mashed potatoes before it ran through my fingers. What a
Thanksgiving!!! And you know, I was thankful to receive it. Every Thanksgiving while I sit with family, I think of
this time and am grateful. Grateful to my Lord and Savior for the sacrifice he made for us and to remember my Brothers
who can only be there in spirit. Have a Blessed Thanksgiving to you all. Steve "Ed" Edmunds C Co 3/8th 4th Div RVN

my book about my brother and fellow Cacti, Joseph Ledesma , Jr., KIA Vinh Hien,
Quang Ngai Province, 5/20/67. Still looking for fellow Cacti who served with Joe in
Basic, AIT, or 'Nam. I want to share some excepts from Joe's letters that describe
events that may trigger your memory if you served with him. Here you go:
AUG 1966, from Ft. Lewis, Washington-
"I won seventeen dollars the other day in a bet. I'm the second fastes runner here. The guys bet me I couldn' run
the mile in my boots under six minutes, so I tried it. I ran it in five minutes and thrity seconds, so now I'm
seventeen dollars ahead".
MAR 2, '67, from 'Nam-
"We just got back from a patrol in the jungle. Boy! You should see what just happened. We went five miles out on a
patrol, and all the way back without anything happening, but as soon as we start coming in to the perimeter, one guy
in my squad falls and breaks his ankle."
MAR 3, '67, from 'Nam-
"Boy! You should see what we did today. We made a combat assault. We got flown by helicopter into an L.Z. and we
had to jump out of the chopper about fifteen feet up in the air. Boy! I used to have eleven guys in my Fire Team,
now I only have seven. When we were jumping out of the chopper, some of the men either broke their backs or ankles."
If you recall even the slightest memory, please contact me. I have helped some people that I have interviewed recall
some memories just from talking out the recollection. It really helps jog the memory from so many years ago. Thanks,
-D.

nicknames of Bronco, Lance, and Warrior.
Cactiben -- USA -- 10/07/2005 1800. Frank, Pancho, I was at Schofield from 61-66
when the 2/19 converted to 2/35 and we joined the 3rd Brigade. Broncos was the
Brigade's nick name and the name of all the Brigade's sports teams but I don,t
recall a horse as a mascot.Of course the Woolfhounds had their dog Kolchak and that
is the only mascot I remember. 1/27 and 2/27 were in the second Brigade
