1775. A terribly long list of KIA's from C2/35 on this day in 1968. From one who made it through that tragedy to Tim Sines (Doc.), Ronald Stuckey, Johnny Fuller and the rest of the brve soldiers on that list, May your families enjoy the freedom you cherished and be sure you will always be remembered.
Donald Blankin -- Blacksburg SC USA -- 09/30/2005 Email 1771. Sept 29 - '69 - Bravo 2/35 got ambushed in the Chu Pau's. We lost a lot of good guys between that day and the next. Spent the scariest night of my life on LP and then dashing back down the trail into the perimeter so Puff and Spooky (or whomever) could work out.
For those of us who went and came back - Jim, Ole, Tom, Indian, Ray and all the others - Welcome Home Brothers. For those who stopped growing old those two days in September - we miss you and pray for you...
With much luck and the grace of the god's no one will have to do it again, or anymore.
Mike Slyck -- Rochester NY USA -- 09/29/2005 1769. Just reminiscing and wondering what happened to some of the guys. Ken Spradlin (Kentucky) in particular. I see his picture but the phone number doesn't seem to be any good. We were in A Co. 2/35 4th Infantry 1968 when he was hit pretty bad below the waist near Duc Lap. I helped put him on a stretcher and he was finally hoisted to a hovering chopper. That day was pretty crazy. Lots of lead flying. I came down with Malaria later and saw him in the hospital in either Na Trang or in Japan. I forget. I forget a lot, but not enough. Sure would like to hear from him. He must be in his late 50's now like me. Seems like a million years ago and yet some of it is just like yesterday. If you read this Kentucky, drop me an email. Like to hear from you. God bless our boys in harms way around the globe. It never ends, does it?

Lynne Krause -- CA USA -- 09/25/2005 Email 1751. Hi all,
I spoke with Ranger Jim Tibbit a little while ago and he said to tell everyone he's doing fine. He lives in Leesville with his daughter-inlaw and 7 year old granddaughter. Their electricity is out, water is scarce and no gas to be found, but he said the house it fine and they're getting by.
I tried getting in touch with Roy Sittig (Ville Platte) and only reached his answering machine. I called his brother Charles and he hadn't heard from him since before Rita made landfall. Hopefully everything is ok.

CactiBen -- USA -- 09/23/2005 1735. I attended a Joe Finch organized cookout at Walter Reed for our 25th wounded/recovering Vets a few weeks ago. This is about the third event I have attended at Walter Reed and I'm amazed at the spirit and morale of our proud Vets!!! One Vet - an attractive Lady - a Medic - was injured in a rollover of a humvee in Iraq with the 25th - back surgery...etc...her daughter is now a medic in Iraq. Another soldier lost both legs below the knees - he was wearing a baseball cap that had the words: " Blown Up" on front and: "Iraq Sucks" on the side...he was quite a character - great spirits...these young Americans continue to amaze me with their positive outlook. Joe Finch is a 25th Vet - a medivac pilot - who organizes these events and who is dedicated to serving our wounded vets - what an inspiriation he is - and he does it because he cares!

"Hi Mike,
Good to hear from you and thanks for the concern. We fared well, just some tree limbs in the yard and loss of power for about a day. Baton Rouge has doubled in size over the last week and it looks like it could be permanent. We'll have to get used to longer lines etc. The least we can do for these poor unfortunate soles that have lost everything.

Frank De La Rosa -- San Antonio tx USA -- 09/06/2005 Email 1697. Just wanted to let everyone know that Nissi Fraise, widow of David Fraise who was KIA in Afghanistan last year with A 2/35, is safe and sound with her baby and her sister. Nissi lived in Gretna, LA,(Nawlins)area and had just purchased a house, and it is now gone totally. She and baby and sister left before Katrina and went to Houston, from there to Cacti Land where she is staying with a friend. The Cacti have helped her with clothes and necessaties etc. They literally got out with just the clothes they had. We are desperately trying to find out about other Cacti Families that were in the area of LA, MS and AL hit by the hurricane. Many of them may need assistance. If any Cacti can offer housing, assistance or anything please email me at C23568@verizon.net ----- We are not sure who may need what yet but I would like to at least put together a list of whatever our Cacti could offer if it is needed.
Thank You.
CactiBen -- USA -- 09/06/2005 1695. More good news from our Cacti in LA.------Thank you for thinking of us in Louisiana. More than
ever we can think of ourselves as a "third world"
state. I am fine in Lake Charles where we had no
storm effects whats-so-ever. I did move my daughter
and her baby to New Orleans last week and that lasted
all of 2 days before we evacuated her out on Saturday
before the hurricane. She and my grandaughter her
safe at my home although everything she is under water
in New Orleans.
Thanks for the thought. From what I am hearing on the
news today, I may use my combat experience on the
streets.

Cactiben -- USA -- 09/06/2005 1694. I got word from Roger Ladd that contact has been made with Doug Oliver HHC 1/35 1967-68 Doug lives Moss Point which is right at Pascagoula, MS.
---Doug's email to Roger --- Quite a blow, some of these folks have nothing. I am sure you have seen the pictures and by this time are tire of them. But these folks have nothing. I think our Congressman Gene Taylor said it best last night on the radio," I want to say to all my collegues that if you come down here for a photo-op you better bring something". I only had some fencing and trees down. I came out really good. The constant sound of huey's and 130's over head remind me of a galaxy far far away. Blackhawks and Coast Guard SAR helicopters are everywhere it has been one hell of a week.
CactiBen -- USA -- 09/06/2005 1693. Got an email after I inquired about Garner Brock KWV 35th-----Thank you for inquiring after my father-in-law. He asked me if I would answer you, to let you know that at this time, we are all fine. Here in Columbus, MS, my husband and I and my husband's sister and here family were without power for a number of hours, but we are all back to our routines now - work is fine, and our homes are fine.
My in-laws, further south in Kosciusko, MS had a longer power outage, which was quite a hardship, since daddy sits and rests in a motorized recliner chair, and sleeps in a motorized hospital bed. It was difficult for them to get by without power. My brother in law took a generator to them, and that did help them get through until their power came back on.
None of us had any home damage or serious problems - we are so very blessed. We now turn our thoughts and prayers to the people on the gulf coast, and hope that their hardship is alleviated as quickly as possible.
Again, sir, thank you for your inquiry.
Sincerely,
Patricia Brock

1.Lee Ingram ---- Things north of Dothan are pretty normal. The eastern corridor from Mobile to I-10 is a mess. Lots of property damage, loss of power and the predictable cleanup following the effects of a hurricane. We are so blessed compared to the folks in New Orleans and Biloxi. Many of our utilities crews are already there attempting to restore power on the outlying areas of the cities. Not much can be done until the rubble in Mississippi is moved, and of course there isn't much that can be done in New Orleans until the water recedes. Catch 22 there... they need electrical power to run the auxiliary pumps that back up the diesel main pumps.
Please keep that entire area in your prayers.

hopefully I will be there in Scottsdale next year. If there is anyone

Peter Birrow -- Tyngsboro MA USA -- 08/12/2005 Email 1568. Ben - Right on with your comment, and thanks for saying what I've had some trouble articulating since Louisville. As usual it was a fantastic time and experience.
Mike Slyck -- Rochester NY USA -- 08/10/2005 1566. The highlight of the most recent reunion was having 31 family members of our KIA's there.
We had one daughter who was 3 yrs old when her Dad was killed. She rode a Greyhound bus for 18 hours to be there. Her Dad had a line platoon then was Recon plt leader. The guys who knew she was coming that served with her DAD,(about 15 guys between the two platoons)were a little nervous of course. After the first night the two platoons were almost fighting to see who could talk with her next.Tears flowed like Niagara Falls. She promised to be at next years reunion as the guy who won a 50/50 donated his 500+ bucks to her to fly.
A Mom met the guys who were with her son when he was killed. A brother met guys from his kia brothers unit.
We had sisters, brothers, moms, widows who never remarried and several kids who never ever knew their Dads, and many nephews and neices they never got to know. It was a wonderful time for all of them, as it brought answers to the families who only had the official version the guys they met could explain what was happening at the time. The families all said, that this is the best thing that has ever happened to them since their loss. I tell you we have a few guys who do nothing but try to locate families of our Cacti KIA's to get photos to go on our website and to invite them to join us at the reunions. Many guys at the reunion were so thankful that they were able to finally meet and talk with the family of a lost buddy.
It is not Closure (I dont believe in it) but a putting at peace a little bit of bad memories. Knowing that they brought info and knowledge to the families made these guys so happy and feeling much better about themselves.
I wish every military group would do the same for their KIA families for they are the ones who still hurt so much even after so many years. Several of them said the not knowing the details, not knowing if their loved one suffered, was a hero or what is the worst thing they have had to deal with over the years. Makes me feel so good to know our organization was a help to them. Thanks to all my Cacti Brothers who helped accomplish this great feat.
Cactiben -- USA -- 08/10/2005 1564. Just finished a great book called " GENERATION KILL" by Evan Wright. It is about a Marine recon team in the early stages of the the war in Iraq and this book will make you appreciate what our brave young soldiers went trough. All Americans should read this. There are many similarities of what we experienced on a day to day basis. Incompetemt officers, great officers, good NCO's, bad NCO's, defined missions with purpose, missions that made no sense, etc. Our active Cacti probably had similiar experiences in Aganistan.
read it and spread the word...check it out

This past weekend, we celebrated our 40th High School Reunion in Arlington Nebraska, but one very special guy, Wes Sperling was not there with us. Wes died May 8,1968 in Kontum Province, Vietnam fighting for our country's freedom. We placed a plaque created by a classmate as well at his grave site today with a number of classmates there honoring him. Lots of tears were shed in his memory. I miss him so much. Those who did survive and come home were rediculed by some, which was shameful!!! I have fond memories of Wes as a kind and gentle man with so much to give in life. Mr. Jones, I have learned that my uncle did leave with 35th cacti infantry batalion 1, baker company from Okinawa, he sustained a head wound in September of 1950 and return to his unit the first part of November, he was captured Nov. 27, 1950 and died in captivity on March 31, 1951. I am in hopes that this new information will ring a bell with you. Also, I would like to know where and how I might obtain a cacti pow patch for the memorial my family is erecting in his honor and memory any information would be appreciated. Thank Kriste Elrod

James Stevens I think was at point. Then myself then in file was James Reiber and Gregory Barnell. I saw helment profiles of NVA approx,I recall about 25-50m away. Yelled at point. He opened fired then the rest. What seemed like an eternity maybe was only minutes. I saw the point get hit in the theigh then mylelf in the chest. After all of these years I still haven't got the facts and I don't want to take to the grave, hopefully for another 30 years. Frienly fire or real deal? Still feel bad about this. Was to bad to go back. Still feel that I let somebody down. God Bless those who finished the tour and those who gave the ultimate price. God bless the men of this war and those who serve now.
Bob Stedman -- Columbus Oh USA -- 06/04/2005 Email 1439. This is a statement of rememberence for the firefight of June 3rd and 4th, I remember us humping all day and setting up a night location near ben het. It was around midnight that the NVA morter tubes started going off. LT Grosshart and I shared a foxhole that we dig in about 15 min. after the first incoming morter round. Heavy and fierce was the words to use. I was with the 1/35th co A 3rd plt Medic. we were on the opposite side of the worst attack but we had NVA come around us to try and penetrate the perimeter, proof was we found 2 dead NVA the next day 20 feet in front of my position.I remember Robert Floyd came across the perimeter with his 60 and tried to get a sniper out of the trees.I remember a chopper landing on a strobe lite in the night to drop ammo and evac wwounded.Remember hearing metel landing near our hole and reaching up and feeling in the dark for the hot scrapnel.Enemy tracers green and blueish in color came very near. I could hear screams of men, dident know if it us or them. This has played through my mind over the years. Thanks for reading and Bless the dead

The 4th platoon with about 23 men set up blocking a trail leading from Laos. Not a good idea as, later that evening, a fresh battalion of NVA decided to walk through their NDP. The fighting lasted all night and into the morning of June 4th. It was furious, intense and close--very, very close. We lost Butler, Brockmeyer and Gilmer almost immediately. Those few guys in the beleaquered 4th platoon fought like the hard core warriors that they are and held the line. What a great bunch of men for me to be privileged to be associated with! God bless them all-living and dead.

I want to thank the Cacti Association for helping me to locate men who served with Joe and knew him during his service in 'Nam. I am compiling information for a book I am writing about his life. Although Joe was a civilian for 19 of his 20 years, his service in Vietnam is an integral part of his lifestory that me and my family want to share with others.
Thank you to the Cacti men who served with Joe that I have spoken with and shared their memories of Joe, and those who were there on this day 38 years ago: Doc Joe Baker, Randy Morris, Jim Phillipe, and Mike Hord. I am still searching for more men out there who served with Joe.
His Award of the Bronze Star with "V" Device reads as follows: "For Heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. On May 20, 1967 Specialist Four Ledesma distinguished himself while serving as a Fire Team Leader in Company C, 2d Batallion, 35th Infantry, which was conducting a search and destroy operation near Duc Pho. The company was engaged by a numerically superior enemy force deployed in defensive trenches and bunkers. Specialist Four Ledesma's Platoon had maneuvered to within a few meters of the enemy lines when it's advance was halted by intense small arms and automatic weapons fire. Undaunted by this, Specialist Four Ledesma crawled to withiin six feet of an enemy automatic weapon position and attempted to destroy it with rifle fire and grenades. Firing from a completely exposed position, he suppressed the enemy fire enough to allow his platoon members to advance and close with the enemy. As the machine gunner of the platoon began maneuvering forward Specialist Four Ledesma moved to his side to provide better protective fire but was mortally wounded in this heroic act. Specialist Four Ledesma's courasgeous and self-sacrificing actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit on himself, his unit, and the United States Army."
My family continues to love and miss Joe very much. His memory will never leave us. -David Ledesma

I would think that the Army would be more sensitive to the nation's Vietnam Veterans. I doubt that there are many of us who would thank Hanoi Jane for what she did.
By the way, I stopped a Korean War veteran yesterday to shake his hand and thank him for his service. He was speachless.

Dear Mr. Willard
This letter is in response to your e-mail, dated 09 May 2005, to the Office of the Inspector General (IG), Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES). You expressed concern regarding the sale of Jane Fonda's book and requested the book to be removed from the PXs.
AAFES' mission is to provide a wide variety of products that appeal to everyone's point of view. AAFES does not attempt to censor books from their stock assortment. All book and magazine assortments are selected for AAFES by U.S. national and regional book distributors. Our purchasing decisions are based on a number of factors such as customer demand and demographics. Outside of the restrictions found under the Honor and Decency Act regarding sexually explicit material, AAFES makes no attempt to influence the buying choices offered in our book and magazine departments. While the military mission is unique, its members represent a cross section of society and they generally parallel those of their civilian counterparts. Our customers want to purchase the same products found on the local economy.

Charles(Tuck)A.Clark -- Lexington Va USA -- 05/14/2005 Email 1405. Good Afternoon:
I am writing a memoir on my deceased father's Korean War experience. He left a lot of written records as well as audio cassettes concerning his military service, so I am very fortunate in that respect. But there are still many unanswered questions about the war that I would like to know.
I would like to interview soldiers who were with the 35th Infantry Regiment, Company "L" during 1948-1953. My father handled .357 Recoilless Rifles, he was an ammo-bearer and a medic. He was also an M.P. (state-side) between the years 1948-1953. He was stationed at Fort Riley, Kansas at one time as well.
I am also looking specifically for any Korean War experiences concerning Hill 717 and Kumwah. If anyone knows Lt. Lackner or a soldier with the last name of Evans (fought on Hill 717) or Ted Allen (an Aid Man), please contact me. And some other names that came up during conversations with my father: "Avalanche" (nickname), August Gallanti, and Kip Walton.
Pictures welcomed!
Any information or stories concerning these years during the Korean War would be greatly appreciated. Naturally, any information that is used by outside sources will be given credit in the book (with prior written approval from the information source). I thank you, in advance, for your help.

I think this is the only photo I have with George in it. He barely is in this one. George Edden is on the top right side behind Earl Worthy. This was Christmas Eve 1967. This was one of those Rare Good Days in Vietnam. Before Christmas I had been on a 3 day RR at China Beach, DaNang. I spent my 3 days buying cameras, tape recorders, watches, and whatever my friends had put on the want list. I even managed to buy a gallon of booze to bring back to my friends. Anyway, we had as good a Christmas as could be expected in Vietnam. My daughter was born in Dallas, Texas later that night nearly a Christmas baby.
Anyway, this photo left to right is Bob Laba, Slim Stapleton, Terry Patrick, Eli Whittle, George Edden, Earl Worthy, and me Mike Whitaker.
Sorry I do not have a better photo of George.

I want to echo Richard's comments below. I have been to the Wall in Washington many times and didn't expect to be moved by this one, but I was. The scale was such that I was actually able to touch the names of a couple of my buddies who are near the top lines of their panels. It brought tears to my eyes. They had a top rate show in Massapequa. If you get the opportunity to visit one of these "Walls" take the time to do this and be sure to contact me for a Memorial Card to leave at the site so that any of our old friends who may not know of our Association can be brought into the flock. -- Doc Hall

Frankie G willard -- Wichita Ks USA -- 04/30/2005 Email 1378. I would just like to share my recent experience at the moving Vietnam Wall, The wall just came to Massapequa Park NY , I was driving past on Thur as the memorial was being set up, I was with my daughter and granddaughters, My 4 year old asked what was going on, My daughter explained a little about the war, and what the names on the memorial meant, My Granddaughter looked at me and stated "Popi, you are lucky you didnt die",, That was very emotional to say the least. My daughter suggested we go to the memorial when it opened on Friday, We all went on Friday and they had a terrific setup they , I took the names of my buddies and was tracing their names, again my grandaughter asked what I was doing, I told her these were my friends who were killed, She looked at the names I traced then looked at me and said Popi," You are getting old but they never will", Again I teared up and knew I am a lucky man. for some reason I wanted to share this experience with You all, Even if you can't get to see the Wall in Washington, if the moving wall comes to your area try to visit and bring your family they really do seem to care, Hope to see all at the Reunion This will be my First

"Walls" will be appearing in the following cities on the following dates: April 28 through May 1 Sarasota, FL and Boylston, MA; April 30 through May 6 in Santa Barbara, CA; May 5 - 8 in East haven, CT; MAY 4 - 5 in Conyors, GA; May 12 -15 in Sandusky, OH and Billerica, MA; May 10 -16 in Fresno, CA; May 12 - 18 in Flfarias, TX; May 19 - 21 in Kent, OH; May 20 -25 in Hawthorne, NV; May 21 - 22 in Selfridge, MI; May 26 - 29 in Kirkland, OH; May 26 - 30 in Portsmouth, OH; May 28 - June 2 in Yuba City, CA; and May 27 - June 2 in Woodstock, IL. We need volunteers to leave the Memorial cards at the face of the "Walls" as close to the beginning dates of each "Wall" appearance as possible. Frankie Willard CoC 2BN 35th -- Wichita Ks USA -- 04/15/2005 Email 1358. When I began my journey to find my Uncle Billy (SGT William B. Shelton, Baker company) I had no idea that it would open up to me a world of emotions for some one I have never met. Reading the stories of the other men from the 35th and understanding the honor they displayed in the knowledge that they were probably going to die and did; still they fought with furious courage to the end. I know that their were many other battles. But on Novemeber 27 1950 my uncle Billy returned from a scouting mission to find the men he was trying to protect where all gone. Even after being shot on the head he welded a machine gun in hopes of keeping the enemy from taking any more. From talking with the a few of only 4 men who survived the Chinese out number them by the hundreds. Although they did come home, I can only pray that Billy die quickly. I am in awe of you men from the 35th WWl, WWll, Korea, Nam. I am too in awe of the young men and women in Iraq may God be at your back.

I would like to truly thank the fellow cacti of John Mario Mucci and their families that attended my father's wake and funeral on April 11th and 12th, 2005. Your presence was honored and much appreciated. You have shown me a side of my Dad that I never really knew. My father was a private man and would never discuss the Vietnam War with me or my sister. Born in 1971 and 72, I think my father was sheilding us from the horrors that he had experienced in Vietnam, while struggling with his own feelings and emotions. We mostly knew him as a Chelsea Firefighter serving the community where he grew up. Hearing the stories of his honor, good character, and heroism made me very proud! "A real hero" and "true soldier and friend" is what I heard from his commanding officer and long time buddies. Thank you to Mike Dolan and Reverend William Mark for their eulogies that brought a lot of tears and insight into the kind of man my father was during and after the war. Now that he is gone, I may never know more about his time serving our country, but I do know that I will join him again someday! Thank you again for that precious knowledge! We will miss him!
Tammy Mucci Bergeron -- Manassas Park Va USA -- 04/13/2005 Email 1355. Our brother Mucci has gone to his final bivouac. The Battalion was well represented with five Cacti present to see him off. Rick Rykowsi and his wife; Mike Dolan with his wife; Dave Butters and his sister (who went thru all 12 years of school with John's companion, Addie); Pete Birrow; and Bob Pruniel. We found out that no VFW or American Legion in the Boston area has a firing squad. We could not allow John to go without a proper military funeral. As a contingency plan, I brought a couple of M1 rifles and some blank ammo from Delaware. John got his volleys. His silver star was lost a number of years ago. In two days Pete Birrow got a replacement which was pinned in the casket under his CIB. Reverend William Mark, a Vietnam infantry officer turned chaplain and John's, "foxhole buddy," Mike Dolan gave the most poignant, extemporaneous, eulogies I have ever heard. Even this crusty old Sergeant Major was unable to keep a dry eye. Being a retired city fireman, every fire apparatus in the city, with every on-duty fireman standing at attention, was intermittenly positioned all along the funeral procession to the cemetery to give their final salute. A piper, in full regalia, played Amazing Grace. All-in-all it was a very fitting send off.
David Butters -- Newark DE USA -- 04/13/2005 Email 1354. The next issue of the Cacti Times has been printed and will be on its way soon. The hand off of the baton from Ben to me went pretty smoothly at first but I stumbled a little in the first turn but then got back on my feet to finish the race. I just discovered that the headline that talks about the Louisville Reunion "28 July to 31 August" is a bit optimistic. I'm sure many of us would like a longer reunion but the hotel is going to kick us out on 1 August.
I hope to see you in Louisville, where we'll all be on OP once again (this time there will be NO "Ham & Lima's". We will, however, celebrate the return of the active Cacti to Schofield Barracks after a one-year combat tour in Afghanistan, where they upheld the proudest traditions of the Cacti and the U.S. Army.

On last Friday(8th of April) a brother Cacti departed on his 'Last Patrol'. His friends may think that he is gone forever, but we of the Cacti Family know that he has only gone to 'Take the Point'. While he will be laid to rest tomorrow 'We' know that all it will take is for him to hear 'Heaven's Commander-in-Chief' to call out "Saddle up" and to "Stand-by to pop Smoke", and Mucci will be standing their on an LZ in a clearing with his rifle in both his hands over his head ready to 'Guide in the Birds', bringing those of us who will follow him to that 'Last Stand-down' where we will all truly remain

Being ten years older than John, I never knew him until just after the Battle of One-Niner when he was reassigned from Charlie Company to the TOC as one of my RTO's. I may have been a Master Sergeant and John a Specialist Fourth Class but we quickly became fast and life-long friends. We talked for many, many hours usually along the "Do you remember when" lines. I will sorely miss him. Rest in peace my friend - my brother - my fellow Cacti.

Rick was there today holding John's hand at that moment, just as if 38 years had not passed by. Please say a prayer for a brave Cacti who just fought his last battle.

Lighting up a Chesterfield from a C ration that was packed in 1943 and having 2 inches disappear with the 1st puff.
Having to roll down your sleeves at 6 pm so nothing bad could get you at night.
Having the re up guy coming to the field and trying to get you to re enlist for the benefits.
Using purification tablet which gave you the shits so you didn't catch anything that would give you the shits.
Trying to decide whether to eat the eggs and ham now and save the ham and lima for later or the other way round.
Learning the difference between a trip and a tour.
Finding out how long a year can really be when counted one day at a time.
Sleeping in the rain and sleeping in the mud.
Having an airbed that no matter how long or short the night was always flat before you got up.
Using green matches that were specially treated so they won't light under any conditions.
Trying to figure what you are suppose to do with a topical chocolate bar.
It being both the worst and best time of my life.
Removing your socks and the skin on my feet at the same time.
Making sure when you slept that the same end of your poncho liner was at your feet because of the mud on your boots.
Wearing the same set of cloths for 5 weeks.
Wearing a flak jacket that covered everything important except your balls and head. Both of which I figured on using if I ever got home.
Ending up wearing a loin cloth because after 5 weeks pants had ripped up the inseam and had been cut to shorts trying to stop rip. NOW YOU HAVE A LOIN CLOTH with slit up the front and back. Did anyone wear jocks ? Not me.

The convoy was escorted by state troopers with sireens going and flashing lights plus hundreeds of motorcycles from rolling thunder and chearing crouds linning the route. The 2/162 deserves the reception, they did a good job and had a rough time attached to 1st Cav. I was able to welcome LTC Henderson home, we served together at OSU ROTC Program. CHARLES BRADLEY -- POMONA PARK FL USA -- 03/13/2005 Email 1308. I don't know if most of us can even fathom the amount of effort that Dick Arnold and a few helpers have put into their efforts to obtain photo's of our KIA's to display on their memorial pages. To date they have gathered over 400 photo's of our Vietnam KIA's (as well as several Korean War and WWII KIA's). There are still just a few over 200 more photo's needed for our Vietnam KIA's. In an effort to close this gap I am asking for volunteers in several cities to go to local libraries and search through microfilm copies of newspapers in an attempt to collect news stories, obituaries and news photo's of 26 of these heroes for whom we still need photo's. Volunteers for the following cities are needed (and the number of KIA's we are searching for is indicated beside each city). Atlanta (3); Columbus, GA (2); Orlando, FL (2); Miami (2); St. Louis, MO (2); Albuquerque, NM (2); Memphis, TN (4); San Antonio, TX (3); Houston, TX (4); and Louisville, KY (2). The search is relatively easy and I will be happy to explain the procedure. It could take as much as 1 hour of time for each search but aren't our heroes worth the effort? 26 photo's found would represent more than 10% of the remaining photo's we need. If you can help please contact me at my e-mail below.

Freddy Centers -- elizabethtown ky USA -- 02/25/2005 Email 1289. Gentlemen,
I'm the son of Lt. Arthur P. Trewhella Jr. (1928-1977) who served as a medic in Korea in 1950 and 51. He served on the lines as a combat medic, and I believe he may have been assigned with K or L companies, as the description of the Nov. 27th and 28th fighting on your site fits the little I remember him telling me of his service. He also spoke of the ferocity of the Turkish troops and at somepoint was stationed in close proximity to them.
He also served as paymaster of his unit, and claimed he kept his personal .38 sidearm on the desk as he doled out script.
He had completed OCS at Ft. Benning prior to Feb. 1950, and was at Ft. Dix, New Jersey during a serious Scarlet or Rhuematic Fever outbreak.
My Dad is best remembered for his sense of humor and keen sarcasim, and while he was an officer I'm sure he would have been on who made it clear that he knew when the Army was, well, being the Army. I have a couple of pictures of him in uniform, if that will help jog any memories- but none of him actually in country. Please contact me if you think you might have known him. Thank you.

Tom Trout -- Springfield Oh USA -- 01/16/2005 Email 1248. I recently learned about a guy in my area who has secured 1000's of pounds of goods for shipping to our military overseas.
Saturday morning I visited with Bob Williams (Vietnam Navy Vet) and all I need is donations for postage.
By the WAY, BOB HAD INFORMED ME THAT WE SHOULD SHIP ALL PACKAGES FROM EVERYONE USING REGULAR
PARCEL POST. HE SAYS THAT IT IS ONLY TWO DAYS LONGER IN DELIVERY AND COSTS HALF THE PRICE OF PRIORITY MAIL.
WISH I HAD KNOWN THIS LAST YEAR.
I GAVE HIM 150.00 YESTERDAY AS A PERSONAL DONATION TO SHIP AS MANY BOXES AS THAT WILL COVER TO EACH COMPANY 1SGT, MAJOR JOE WALSH AND SFC PITTS (BN PERSONEL NCO), BOB SAYS THAT SHOULD COVER 20-30 BOXES.
HE HAS A HUGE BUILDING (HIS REGULAR BUSINESS PLACE) AND HAS PALLETS LOADED WITH DONATIONS FROM NABISCO, KEEBLER, ETC. CASES UPON CASES OF SNACK FOODS, SOAP, SHAMPOO, NAIL CLIPPERS, CIGARS, HAND WARMERS, ETC.
HE HAS BEEN SHIPPING STUFF TO IRAQ AND AFGHAN, AND MANAS AFB IN KYGERSTAN SINCE LAST YEAR. YOU SHOULD SEE THE PLAQUES, AWARDS ETC THE UNITS HAVE SENT HIM. INCREDIBLE..
HIS OFFICE IS FULL OF MILITARY MEMORABILIA, HE MUST HAVE OVER 1000 CHALLENGE COINS FROM ALL BRANCHES SET UP IN BEAUTIFUL DISPLAYS, I GAVE HIM MY CACTI DOG TAG THAT GOES ON THE KEY RING AND WILL TAKE HIM ONE OF OUR CACTI ASSN. CHALLENGE COINS THE NEXT TIME I VISIT.
A TRUE REAL PATRIOT AND SUPPORTER OF OUR TROOPS.
HIS WIFE RUNS THE LABELS AND THE CUSTOMS FORMS ON THEIR COMPUTER, HE HAS A CALENDAR SET UP WITH THE MAILING LABELS SO THAT THERE IS AN ORGANIZED DELIVERY SCHEDULE.
HE IS A REALLY SUPER GUY AND I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED MY VISIT WITH HIM.
I WILL BE ASKING EVERYONE I KNOW FOR DONATIONS AND TELL ABOUT WHAT HE IS DOING.
I COUNTED AT LEAST 25 PALLETS LOADED WITH GOODIES JUST WAITING FOR POSTAGE MONEY TO SHIP.
HE GETS RESUPPLIES FROM HIS VENDOR COMPANIES MONTHLY. 25 FOOT TRAILERS ARE PULLED INTO HIS BACK DOCK AND UNLOADED BY FORK LIFT AND STORED IN HIS WAREHOUSE.
AS FAR AS BANG FOR THE BUCK, I CAN TELL YOU THIS IS A GOLD MINE FOR OUR GUYS IF WE SUPPLY POSTAGE.
EXAMPLE, I GO TO WALMART AND BUY 20 BUCKS WORTH OF GOODIES THEN SPEND ANOTHER 20 SHIPPING IT.
IF YOU PROVIDE THE NAME AND ADDRESS HE WILL SHIP TO THAT PERSON.
FOR THE SAME 40 BUCKS BOB WOULD SEND ABOUT 500.00 RETAIL VALUE OF GOODIES TO OUR GUYS.. HE HAS HIGH SCHOOL KIDS VOLUNTEER AND THEY COME AND PACK AND TAPE AND LABEL THE BOXES.
HE HAS ENOUGH STUFF TO STOCK A MID SIZED PX...
IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED PLEASE EMAIL ME FOR MORE INFO.
BY THE WAY, ALL CHECKS AND MONEY ORDERS ARE MADE OUT TO
US POSTMASTER, BOB'S BUSINESS IS ONLY ABOUT 40 YARDS FROM THE WESLEY CHAPEL, FLORIDA POST OFFICE AND HE TAKES THE BOXES THERE TO BE SHIPPED.

Elaine M Croman -- Nowra North NS AUSTRALIA -- 01/07/2005 Email 1237. Now that the hustle and bustle of the holidays is past it would be a good time to acknowlege our Iraq fallen warriors. Their families have experienced the holiday season without their loved one. It is new and fresh and raw. It has been a hard time for them. There were less presents under the tree this year.. there was an empty chair at the table for Christmas dinner.. there was one less voice rooting for a favorite team. Many probably feel although life will never be the same for them the rest of the world goes merrily about it's business. If you could take a few moments to write a note or send a card telling parents you honor and remember the child they lost it will be something they will never forget. It won't make their life less empty but it will help them to feel less alone. Sometimes simple acts from strangers are more powerfull and meaningfull than all the grief counseling in the world.

Charles Taliaferro -- Madera Ca USA -- 12/27/2004 Email -- http://www.kitchentablegang.org 1229. UPDATE FROM THE CACTI CHRISTMAS IN AFGHAN -------
Hello Everyone,
Christmas came and went this year but not so quickly that the Cacti-battalion couldn't celebrate. The senior leadership across the battalion volunteered to take the guard shifts away from the Soldiers so they could enjoy a day off, Most Soldiers just slept in, played games or attempted to get on the internet/phone to call home. As many of you experienced, phone calls this holiday were limited to 3-5 minutes. As you could imagine, the limited connections in theater made it very hard for Soldiers to stay on much longer than this. In the end, I hope that all were able to contact their loved ones back home.
-------------------------------------------
The Soldiers in the field during Christmas received the same meal we received in the photos. I think this was a warm welcome for the time spent away from the fire base and family. The battalion even slipped in a bunch of phone cards and some extra satellite phones for the men to use while deployed forward. You should be hearing from them soon.
-----------------------------------------------------
As the New Year approaches and the battalion enters into its ninth month of deployment, one reflects on the time here and whether or not your unit has had an impact in the war. I can say without a doubt, this battalion has performed admirably and that the impact has been significant. Highlights of the 2nd battalion, 35th Infantry's impacts in Afghanistan include the following (Security, Stability and Support Operations, Humanitarian Assistance):
--------------------------------------------
May 2004: Reinforced existing security and Provincial government of Qalat; installed police forces and leadership in Mizan District; reopened medical facilities and schools.
--------------------------------------------------
June 2004: Extended the security of the main lines of communication (road network) north to the Shajoy District; improved the police force and security; helped install local leadership and governance; reopened the marketplace, schools and medical facilities. Opened communications with the Northern District of Khaki-Afghan and set conditions for follow-on operations to secure and improve the stability of the district.
-----------------------------------------
July 2004: The battalion extended its influence to the southern districts of Shamulzai and Nawbahar, situated along the Pakistan border. This operation helped identify and limit cross border operations by Taliban and Anti Coalition forces trying to influence Zabol Province in a negative way. A district seat was established and security was restored. Conditions are now set for further humanitarian aid and projects to benefit the people of this area.
--------------------------------------------------
August 2004: The battalion sets up governance and stability and support operations in the Arghandab District. Market places once destroyed by the Taliban are reopened. Commerce between outlying districts is restored. Medical facilities are reopened and operating, and infrastructure is being built.
----------------------------------------------
September 2004: The battalion returned to Khaki-Afghan to continue to reinforce the security of the region and to work humanitarian aid and stability operations; Registered voters across Zabol Province setting the conditions for the first ever Presidential elections.
-----------------------------------------------------
October 2004: The battalion in conjunction w/local police and governmental officials provided the safety and security for the Afghan presidential elections.
November-Present 2004: Registered and helped install the last set of police officers and local leaders in Daychopan District.
------------------------------------------------
As the battalion enters into the New Year, our focus may change a little, but the security we have achieved throughout the Province will remain constant and unwavering. I believe through our new partnership with the district leaders, police, and other governmental organizations the success that we are experiencing will continue well into the future. Our commitment to a better and more secure and independent Afghanistan is true in every sense of the word. The 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry is doing remarkable things and will do so until we depart in the coming months. I am very proud of the men and women who have committed themselves to the cause.
-------------------------------------------------------
In closing, the Cacti-battalion wishes you and your loved ones a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

From my family and myself, best whishes of a Merry Christmas!
There is also something else, that I whish to share with you. As some Cacti already know, I try to help as much as I can, with finding information on the internet. This, often after having read a post on a Veteran-forum, where the poster is directly requesting help. Explaining why I am now bringing this up Here, would take up a lot of space on this page however. So please, instead of me doing so, read a post by myself on a Veteran-BBS. Direct link to that post is: http://www.vietnamvets.com/wwwboard/messages/11798.html I sincerely do beleive that you will find the info I posted there, usefull. Both personally, aswell as for the Cacti Assn and its exemplary efforts for its Family! Take Good Care!

When I DEROSed, he took my place in BN TOC. Last year, he joined us but did not want to be contacted by anyone. I asked Ben for his phone #, called him and we had a great chat for over an hour. Last year he retired early from the phone company. He told me at times, watching TV he would occasionally see a scene in his mind from his Bravo days, but nothing horrific. He even saw me on screen once! Don't get me wrong, he was perfectly level-headed and seemed like a great guy with a successful life. He never married and was happy single. He was quite educated and was thinking of returning to school in his retirement. Now, I wonder what happened to him; sickness, depression, accident, who knows? Bruce, I am so glad I met you and worked with you as a Cacti in the worst conditions. I am very proud that you were my skilled replacement in TOC. I am truly happy that we hooked up together again last year, even if only phone. I pray that your final days here on earth were not too trying and painful. Jim Holleran -- Red Bluff Ca USA -- 11/15/2004 Email 1189. Help needed in the Detroit metropolitan region. Thanks to the herculian efforts of Dick Arnold we now have located and posted over 400 photo's of our Vietnam KIA heroes. But we still have approximately 200 more to go. In the Detroit area alone we need to locate photo's for 10 of our heroes. We may be able to do much of this through news stories and photo's from the time of their deaths. We need a volunteer (or volunteers) to locate a library in their neighborhoods that carry archived microfilm copies of the Detroit newspaper(s). There are probably many such libraries. The archived microfilm must cover the time period from 1966 through 1970 and have a microfilm reader with a good printer. Then it is a matter of searching the papers with the appropriate date ranges for stories and obituaries for these 10 young men. It may take more than one trip to do this and maybe as much as an hour per KIA. The work doesn't have to be completed all at one time. If you live in the Detroit area and think that you can help us to update our memorial pages honoring these heroes please contact me and I will be glad to walk you through the process. Blankenship, Delta Company, 2nd Bn, 35th Inf., was killed in Vietnam on January 8, 1968, which coincidentally was the day that I arrived at my unit in Vietnam. Lt. Blankenship was the training officer in charge of our platoon when I was at Fort Sill OCS in 1966-1967. I remember him as a very sharp and professional looking 2Lt. who was one of the few infantry Lt.'s whose first assignment as an officer was to the artillery OCS at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. This is indeed sad news. I had always hoped to meet him again someday.

My squad lost Robert Hale and Billy Podgorny; Robert carried an M-14 because he didn't like the 16 and Billy carried the 79 (we used to kid Billy because at that time the head of the KGB was also named Podgorny - Podgorny's name was Dennis but he went by Billy). On October 9th we lost a Company Commander, several platoon leaders and many other good men. After November 9th we detected a pattern regarding the 9th of the month that would continue thru February 9th when I was hit near Danang. I spent Nov 9th at China Beach on a 3 day pass. So when I returned to wounded Alpha Company (with a case of beer for my buddies under my arms) it was shell shock to realize all the good men we lost - such is the nature of combat. We all remember these good men and their and their family's sacrifice.
Take care! Gary
Gary Dittmer -- Woodbridge Va USA -- 11/08/2004 Email 1174. I've been meaning to look in on things in my old unit. I am glad to see so much interest. I helped built the 35th Inf Reg museum and the quad chapel in F Quad back in '95 when we were reactivated. I'd like to know how it's doing. Is my tile work still there and in good condition? It would be great to get some pics of it. I did hear, however, that a lot of changes were made a few years back when it was determined that the asbestos levels in the buildings were unacceptable. I hope all is well.

!!! GOOD MORNING VIETNAM !!! WELCOME BACK !!! IF WE ARE ALL BACK !!! I DO NOT FEEL LIKE I AM ALL BACK YET !!!
Anyway, HAPPY VETERANS DAY to ALL on November 11, 2004.
I do like this website. I am the RTO (2nd from the left) in Phillip Buice's Website Photo on this website's Home page. I was in "Fighting Delta Dolphins", 3bn.,1-35,25th,4th,D co.,2nd platoon, 1st.squad in 1967 & 1968 (I think) This is my first email to this site but I read it nearly every day.
I just got back from "WALLY WORLD" (walmart) and noticed the Local Veterans photo display they are building for Veterans Day. I dug one of my old photos out and had them copy it and add it to the rest of the Veterans Display. They give you a larger copy and a small copy with a ribbon display to wear. I put this photo:
of me putting an American Flag on a Vietnam grave where we had made camp for a few days. I do not remember who came up with the flag. I found a stick to hold the flag with and stuck it on the grave like my Vietnam Version of the famous Marines at Iwo Jima Photo " http://pages.arlingtoncounty.com/iwo_jima.htm " . Just a little Vietnam humor that most of us understand and nobody else gets it.
Anyway, I added this photo to the Walmart Display and I had them add " www.cacti35th.org " to the top of the photo so maybe some other lost vietnam vets might find this website.
I usually do not even tell anyone I went to Vietnam because the first thing they asked me was "How were the drugs there". I never have even done any type of drugs except beer, wine, or whiskey. In Vietnam there was not much of that where we were. When you smelled marijuana you were about to get shot at or ambushed. Then we brought all the innocent civilians over here. I am glad they could tell the difference, I never could.
Anyway, I thought the Walmart photo might be of interest to some of you.
Thanks again for this website,
Mike Whitaker

We contacted Larry had a great conversation and put him in touch with Tom Birdsong (CoA 1st/35th). They have since kept in contact as well.
We mentioned Larry to our friend Gary Perkins (CoA 1st/35th) and they too have been in contact.
Louisville will have new CoA 1st /35th faces. Larry Starling and Gary and Patty Perkins.
We know that the reunion will be as meaningful for them as they have been for us.
Thinking of you ALL this Veteran's Day....

Jim Holleran -- Red Bluff CA USA -- 11/06/2004 Email 1171. Fellow Cacti: Ben is correct. Websites are assaulted constantly by robots trying to collect email addresses. In our case, they get only mine and the other Association Officers' email addresses. Our web pages are all "shells" with no information in them. When you click on a link, the page is created "on the fly" by filling in the "shell" with information from an enctrypted database. A web robot cannot see anything except the empty shells, so it has nothing of interest to harvest. I usually delete MUGU messages so that you don't have to read them. If you look at the "source" for this page (right click and then choose "View Source") you will see that the email addresses are "coded". That is not for the robots. That is for any email harvesting program that might exist on your computer. So we have you covered from all directions.

The message is left so that the companies other collectors know that the emails here have been harvested already. I think our webmaster has set up protections on this guest book so that they arent actually able to collect the addresses but they think they have.

On June 24, 1966 William Ellis Jr. was serving with Alpha Co 1/35th when they were sent into a landing zone in support of Recon platoon which had made contact. While moving forward in support William spotted a wounded Recon man and turned back to a landing zone to get help for him. This was the last that anyone in the unit ever saw him. The unit (including the wounded Recon man) was shortly withdrawn from the LZ but no sign of William was ever found again. William Ellis is one of just a couple of Cacti Vietnam KIA's whose body was never recovered. We do not currently have a photo of William for our Memorial pages. It is assumed that this story would of been newsworthy in his old hometown of Summerville, SC (just northwest of Charleston) at the time of his disappearance. We would like to find a volunteer to visit the local library and go through the local newspaper microfilm archives from the time to see if we can obtain a photo of William. This would require approximately 1 to 3 hours of time at the library and I would be happy to talk someone through the process. If you can help us in our attempt to upgrade our memorial to this hero please contact me at jimdochall@yahoo.com. Thanks -- Doc

We still need volunteers for Clay City, KY Oct 13 - 17 (This is located about 40 miles southeast of Lexington) And we need a volunteer to visit the Traveling Wall when it comes to Cartersville, GA on Oct 28 -31 (On the northwest side of Atlanta). All that you will need to do during these visits is to leave a Memorial Plaque that I will provide for you. This plaque serves to honor our KIA's as well as provide information to any old Cacti or Cacti KIA families who might happen to visit the Wall. It is not tough duty and may allow an old buddy to find out that we exist. Thanks - Doc Hall
