4620. Hello all! I am trying to find the necessary documentation which would establish that my unit was deployed to Thailand in 1962. At the time I was assigned to the Eng.Platoon 1st Battle Group,HHC 35th Infantry,Schofield Barracks Hawaii. If I recall right we were deployed August 1962 - December 1962 Thanks in advance........................MC

4618. I had to say good-bye to my Cacti family today and I miss them already. These last four days in Virginia Beach have been truly awesome. To be with the men I served with in difficult and uncertain times, along with their wives and families, means all the world to me. Over the years we have grown close once again, a true brotherhood and sisterhood. We still look out for each other and we are there for each other when they need us. I have met many Cacti at these reunions and I look forward to seeing them all again each year. I have never been around a greater bunch of people in my life. Unfortunately we did not have any WWII Cacti with us this year and only three or four from Korea. It was great to meet some of the active Cacti soldiers and I am confident that they will carry on the traditions of the Cacti wherever they go. The time seems to be passing quicker now and it won't be long before we will all form-up again in the Chicago area next year. Many thanks go to Doc Johnson and many others who work so hard to make these reunions so enjoyable. I've said this many times before, if you have never made it to one of our reunions, you don't know what you've been missing. I've talked with many who said they were apprehensive about going the first time but once they attended and met up with men they served along side with and men who have walked in their boots, they want to keep coming back each year. I hope to see everyone next year for another outstanding reunion

4617. 45 years ago, we lost some very good men. The time from 9-24--9-30 was a time from hell. Tim Sines, also known as Little Doc, Lt. Fulkerson, Stucky, Golda, and many others. C/2/35th Inf.. and B/2/35th, who came to the aid of C. May you all rest in peace.

4616. Best reunion yet. Thank you all Cacti for making this so great. My brother Tony and I are already planning for next year. The way everyone interacted and mixed regardless of company, battalion, or years served, was phenomenal. I can not thank all of the people individually so, I won't even try. We are Cacti and that says volumes. The board, "Doc" Johnson, and all that attended, Thank you and God Bless you all. Be well brothers and sisters. "Doc" Olea

4612. Last call for the Bravo 2/35 Luncheon that will be held at the Military Aviation Museum on Friday, September 27th. The bus will leave the hotel at high noon and will return us by four PM. A fantastic interest in this event has attracted 73 Cacti and friends so far. The bus will only hold 58 so we reluctantly have to ask some of those who drove to the reunion to help us with the transportation. Reservations can still be made by sending a $22 check made out to me and received by Monday the 23rd. My address is 6060 Shore Blvd So #103 Gulfport Fl 33707. Hope to see you there!

4608. The article on page 1 in the Cacti Times about the monument dedication and reference to Don "Doc" Johnson stated that he "was one of the principle founders of the Association." It did not state that he was THE founder of the Association. Ben did a tremendous amount of work to start and grow the Association but he is no longer a member.

4607. I was reading the article on the monument dedication and noticed a glaring error in Don Johnson's speech. Don Johnson did not start the association. The idea was born on a beach in Melborne, FL by 8 members of Charlie co. We decided to get as many people in Las Vegas as we could. Ben Youmans was one of the eight and he got most of the people to Vegas. In Vegas Gen. Moore rented space at the VFW and it was voted to start an association. If anyone should get the credit for the association it is Ben Youmans. It doesn't matter what people think of Ben at least give credit where it is due. William Keller

If you haven't sent in your registration or made travel plans, you need to "saddle up" and get it done! I think it will be one of our best. 4592. I just completed emailing over 330 copies of another fine issue of the Cacti Times, prepared by John Lorts and Bill Henson, with contributions from many others. 35 have been returned undeliverable. That's a little less than 10%! If you are reading this and have not received your copy, it would be a good idea to contact me. There are many reasons email is returned to the sender: Your server "reads" the incoming mail as spam, due to the size of the attachment. (The Times is 36 pages, which is 14MB of info.), if your '13 dues are not paid, you have been taken off the mailing list, members who renew, but don't print their email address legibly, members who renew with their reunion registration, but don't include their newest email address, and those who renew but don't update their info. I will try the 35 addresses one more time with the NEXT issue, but if they are returned again, the addresses will be eliminated. I have "send" receipts for each copy sent.

4576. Hello. My name is William J. Jernigan. I am a contributor to the Korean War Project in honor of my uncle, Cpl. Daniel Joseph Carter, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, 4th Platoon, KIA 3-11-52 at Punchbowl. Two years ago I discovered his platoon Sgt. Francis E. Dahl in Sidney, MT. He was very helpful in enlightening me about my uncle and several of his buddies and had great comments on their behalf; and I try to maintain communication with him. I spoke with him today and informed him of the following event. My purpose of this message is to inform you that one of our elected officials, U.S. Senator Tim Scott, is hosting two separate honor ceremonies on behalf of South Carolina Korean War Veterans on July 27, 2013. The first is at 0900 hrs. at the University of SC-Upstate Readiness Center, 300 North Campus Blvd., Spartanburg, SC 29303 and the second is at 1600 hrs. at the Charleston Area Convention Center, Exhibit Hall'B', 5001 Coliseum Drive, North Charleston, SC 29418. I don't know if any of your members are SC residents or not, but wanted to share this with you in case they are and don't know about it. If anyone is and have an interest in attending, they can call one of the Senator's office numbers to have their name added to the guest list: Spartanburg area veterans: 864-233-5366 Columbia area veterans: 803-771-6112 Charleston area veterans: 843-727-4525 The ceremonies will consist of a recognition service and eligible veterans will receive a Congressional Certificate of Appreciation and a lapel pin. I will be attending on behalf of my uncle; but my main purpose is to show respect and honor for all those that served in Korea. I hope If you will choose to help pass this on to anyone in SC so they can join in the ceremonies. I am very appreciative of those who have served in all causes and I commend you and others who have worked so diligently to on behalf of your association. Best regards to you all! William J. 4572. Thank you to Kevin Koloff for leaving a virtual flower tribute on my Uncle Henry Serembo's name on the Manila, Philippines National Cemetery website today. I only knew he was killed during an invasion in the Philippines and buried in Luzon in 1945. My stepfather was his twin brother but did not speak much about him over the years. He would look at his brother's Purple Heart and shed tears. My stepfather was also in the Army but not serving in the same theater. Four brothers in the family served at the same time! Only Henry did not return. My research, after many years, has finally disclosed the "Band of Brothers" with whom he served. As a retired veteran and Army nurse my thanks to you all past and present for your service. What a delight to find out more about my Uncle. I doubt there are any fellow soldiers in my uncle's unit living today but if there are thank you for your service and I would love to hear from you.

4566. Today, in 1966, Recon platoon fought a desperate battle within a stones throw of Cambodia and the Ia Drang River. Recon lost ten good men that day and gave a good accounting of themselves as a platoon against a vastly superior force without a single prepared position. Thanks to A Company's eventual arrival, plentiful artillery and accurate air strikes, a lot of us were able to walk out shaken but alive. At least 66 NVA didn't. If you have a drink tonight, tip one up for Sgt. Warren Knepper and his squad. Those guys were the best.

4551. Dear Cacti: I have the honor of producing a documentary that explores the Name Upon the Wall. Fellow Hingham resident and Bowdoin College Alum, LT Curtis E. Chase 2/35th KIA 6 May '67 is the focal point of the project. I am especially interested in hearing from those that knew Curt and served beside him. My ambition is to create something that tells the story of his time, does justice to his memory and sacrifice while also reminding us and the greater whole that for every name on a memorial wall, plaque or statue, there is an individual who's sacrifice is due respect and recognition. As the project develops, I plan to share the resources I have encountered with the 35th Infantry Regiment Assn. I would be eternally thankful for any assistance you could offer. Most Sincerely, Mark Brodie Hingham MA Bowdoin College '87

4525. G'day. Thursday, April 25 was ANZAC Day in Australia. ANZAC Day is a national holiday of remembrance of the first major embarkment of the Australia and New Zealand military in WWI at Gallipoli. It is also a day of remembrance and commemoration of fallen military since as well as a day to honour all Australia military service. Following ceremonies at the Domain (Sydney CBD-Central Business district) a veteran and military parade followed. A fly over of military aircraft followed as well. I had the honour to march with the American contingent of allied veterans at the parade. America was at the forefront of the allied veterans (as the contingents were placed in alphabetical order) for the parade march. The parade passed through the centre of Sydney CBD on way to the ANZAC Memorial at Hyde Park where the parade disbanded. The American contingent was escorted by 6 active duty Australia Army service members. The American flag was not lowered as it passed in review (unlike other countries) on parade. There were about 30 of us in formation and it was an informal march. There were an estimated 110,000 spectators along the parade route. The entire parade went for 4 hours. Americans are well received in Australia and held in high esteem for their military duty throughout the years (especially WWII) and in their current military endeavours.God Bless America! 4520. In reading the latest edition of the Cacti Times, I notice some commentary about Ted Winowitch. I was his "Shotgun" platoon leader when we deployed to the 68th Aviation Battalion (formerly known as the UTT Helicopter Company) in late 1964. All the platoon were volunteers and Ted was the only member who had previously served a similar tour. We had been in country about a month and, on this particular day, we were flying over a village named Binh Gia. Despite flying over the area all day, we had seen nothing -- although intelligence said there were over 3000 NVA in the village. We had other reports like that in previous missions which didn't pan out, so we were somewhat casual about it. About four o'clock in afternoon, all hell broke loose and we were taking fire from everywhere. My roommate at the time, Danny, a pilot in another helicopter, was shot down. Fortunately, other helicopters were able to land and rescue him. Another chopper was hit by anti-aircraft fire and one of my door gunners was shot through the leg. They evacuated him to the hospital and then returned the helicopter to our base at Ton Son Nhut where we cleaned it out and reloaded the ammunition. I was going to go back out on that helicopter but Ted pleaded with me to let him go instead. I agreed because I had to make sure other choppers were manned, and I knew I could go on another helicopter later. The chopper started rotating the engine and rotor blade, but Ted wasn't around so I jumped in the gunners seat and strapped myself in. Suddenly, Ted came running around the corner so I got out. This helicopter was shot down about a half hour later and no one survived. When I went out on a later flight, we flew into the area where Ted's helicopter had gone down and we received heavy fire. I remember looking at the rounds coming at us and thinking they were aimed straight at my head, and knowing that there were four rounds I couldn't see for every round I did see. After circling several times and continuing to receive fire, we were forced to withdraw because it was too dark. When we landed in the village two days later, we discovered what an unbelievable job the NVA had done camouflaging their positions, which is why we had been unable to see the thousands of NVA troops. Ted was the guy everyone in my platoon looked up to, and I will never forget him. I have an etching of his name from "The Wall" in my office.

A Warrior's Wife She who has endured so much, strength, Love and wisdom, given by her touch. Mother, Wife and Friend, when broken, always there to mend. Never to intimidate or hurt, never to wonder, flirt. A teacher to all she meets,a lasting love, knowing of no retreat. In time of loneliness and grief, strength to be, when eyes weep. An angel on this earth, did of my children, give birth. Purer of heart none can be,she who always stands by me. Sorry for her pain I have caused, but to forgive myself, for she already does. If I could, a new life make, pray I give to her more love than I may take. With smile and grace in she, fill my heart with memories. No better woman I could find,to fulfill this life of mine. When once I knew not of such, blind to faith and it's touch. A gift from God, all to see,she who is my destiny. I pray together we will always be, and I thank God for her time with me. When our day in passing comes, and our task on Earth is done,God show her the love and forgiveness she has shown to me. Until then, not free, my mind to be. God, reward her for her faith, dedication and loyalty, for no other way should there be. Cliff Totten B Co. 1/35th Inf.

4511. My name is Andrea Deisher and I am a student at Westlake High School in Austin, Texas. My English class is reading The Things They Carried, and is now doing a project memorializing soldiers whose names are on the Vietnam Memorial Wall. We are commemorating lost soldiers and I received Robert Henry Lerner who was a member of the 35 infantry. Through my research I found this website (www.cacti35th.org). I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share any memories, experiences or photos you have with Robert Henry Lerner that I can include in my memorial to make my tribute more personal. If you would like to see similar projects to the one I'm working on and where my memorial will eventually be posted, please visit http://www4.eanesisd.net/~vietnam/. Also, please feel free to contact my teacher, Kristy Robins, at krobins@eanesisd.net. Private First Class Robert Lerner was killed in action on August 31st, 1966 in South Vietnam. He was with the 3rd Plt, Co B, 1st Battalion, 35th Infantry, 3d Bde Task Force, and 25th Infantry Division at the time of his death. Thank you very much for your time, Andrea Deisher

4510. ****corrected email address****I am a proud daughter of a Vietnam Veteran! My dad, Dan "Doc" Vasquez, served as a medic with A Co 2/35th from Feb 1968 - Feb 1969. Every year for as long as I can remember he would get quiet and sad right around this time. (March 30th, 31st & April 1st) Though he didn't go into much detail, he shared that on those three days in 1968, all hell broke loose. In October it will be 6 years since he lost his battle with kidney cancer. I miss him every day. I can never imagine what he, and all you other heroes went through, I can only offer my heartfelt thanks for your sacrifice. To all of you Vietnam Veterans, THANK YOU & WELCOME HOME!!

4506. From Nancy Heil, President American Legion Auxiliary Unit 195: I have been in touch with you in the past and provided you with the burial site and a picture of John Larry Jeffers. His friends around home called him Larry. We named our American Legion Post 195 in the Lugoff/Elgin area after him when we formed it in 2001 and you posted that information on your site at that time. I just wanted to let you know that we have recently been able to purchase a post home and we have a Facebook page at American Legion Post #195 if you would like to visit and see what we have accomplished. We were recently presented with a commemorative quilt made in his honor by two of our local ladies. It is now hanging on the wall in our building. I am in the process of posting a picture of the quilt and the commemorative statement on the back to our Facebook page. If you have any Cacti memorabilia, anything relating to Larry or any stories that we could include on our wall, please mail to: American Legion Post #195 534 Wildwood Lane Lugoff, SC 29078. 4505. This past week CBS aired a segment of The Amazing Race from Hanoi, Vietnam. The segment aired from the B52 War Memorial Park in Hanoi, and the B52 wreckage was prominently displayed in the background of almost every scene broadcast. CBS has thus far refused to offer an apology for this broadcast. I recommend everyone reading this go to CBS.Com and send a comment to the network asking for that apology. I also recommend you boycott the network and their advertisers until an apology is tendered. Don't let this insult stand.

4504. Troopers, I wanted to send out a notice to our 4th ID Cambodia 1970 veterans (1-12th, 1-14th, 3-8th, 1-22nd, 2-35th, 92nd AHC, 4-42th FA, 6-29th FA, and Dust-off 498th Med.) of the 2014 Rendezvous I am working to organize. I am asking you to forward this message to everyone on your mailing list, who participated in that operation to join us, because I won't have a good many addresses that you might have. Let them know too that they (you) can find the After Action Report for the Cambodia Vets Reunion I put together back in 2010 in Reno on our homepage (www.currahee.org), in case they want to learn more about us and what this upcoming rendezvous in 2014 would be like. If you haven't seen it, check it out (lots of pictures and details). We hope this next one will be much larger and regrettably, it will be my last attempt to bring as many of us back together one last time. It was such an honor for me to make contact with all of you and getting to know so many of you, during those several years researching and writing "Twelve Days In May" or type in: www2.xlibris.com/books/webimages/wd/78430/ in your search engine. I have created a poll on my unit website (www.currahee.org) to help find out how many of you will attend. Check it out, there are already some 4th ID members signed on the "Attendees List". It is time for me to start contacting the various facilities in the three locations--Reno, Las Vegas and Tunica, MS--for the best deal we can get to accommodate our group, I.e. room rates, eating facilities (banquet nights), etc. If you don't get your group's request in at least a year in advance, you miss out with other units contracting with those facilities and getting the best deals. I need must higher numbers by mid-summer than what the poll is showing now to make this special rendezvous happen. The poll is now showing Tunica, Mississippi is the preferred location for the event. If you plan to attend, go and vote for your choice. I have uploaded some additional information (agendas) about the reunion. I will continue to add more information in coming weeks and months, now that I have finished the latest book manuscript, which will head to the publisher in another week, I can concentrate more on the event. The past year has been totally devoted to that puppy! I look forward to making the 2014 Rendezvous happen, but can only do it if you help make it happen. What say you? Get your name on the "Attendees List", if it isn't there already, so your buddies can see that some of their unit members will be there. It is a scary move for first timers to walk among strangers....but bottom line is that we aren't strangers, but veterans with much in common and who many of us walked the same ground for the same purpose. Also from Charlie Co was myself Shockey Maley, Larry Luscri, Bill Keller Jimmy Holmes and other friends. We got too see a graduation of new INF. Soldiers. That was great and we also got too see a class of Airborne trainees. Then we went too the INF. Museum where we were meet by Diane. She first took us upstairs too theI think it was called the Continental Rm. where we had a great lunch. The Restaurant itself is great and also the Bar. after that Diane came back and took us downstairs too meet Mr. Owens think that was his name. He then took us on a tour of the Museum. Their is one thing that i think all the Cacti would love and that is the Combat Simulators that is whwt our active duty troops work with. Well i think it cost about $10.00 dollars. But let me tell u its worth it and if u have your grandchildren with you and u took them u will be the greatest ha ha. Their is so much too see and its worth it. they ask for a donation of $5.00 dollars when u enter the main Lobby. Also when your their u have to see Heritage Walk that is where all the pavers are too honor the troops.

4484. Any Cacti in the Bakersfield, CA area. On Friday March 1 a Cacti hero from the Korean War is being laid to rest. His name is Roosevelt Clark. His Company was overwhelmed as the Chineese entered the war 62 years ago in November of 1950. Roosevelt and many other Cacti went missing that day and it was only recently that his body was identified and arrangements made to return him home. A memorial service will be conducted for him on Friday Mar 1 at the People's Missionary Baptist Church at 1451 Madison St in southwest Bakersfield beginning at 11 AM. Following the service his remains will be taken to Hillcrest Cemetery for burial where a graveside service will take place. He will be buried beside his Aunt who raised him and anquished over his loss all the years of her life while he was missing. It would be very nice for the Cacti to be able to greet his next of kin and express our appreciation for the loss that their family has suffered and to honor our hero. If anyone in the Bakersfield area can attend the memorial service at the church or at the cemetery please contact me. It is the least that we can do for our hero and for his family. All you have to do is to talk to a family member following the service to tell them that Roosevelt is still remembered and that their sacrifice is appreciated by all of us in the 35th Inf Reg Association. This is very easy and will be greatly appreciated by the family, I'm sure. I guarantee you that you will come away from this experience feeling great that you were there to honor this hero. -- Thanks Cacti Forever - Doc Hall

4472. Bill Greenwell was KIA on this date 45 years ago, a blink of time gone by in a flash. Forty-five years and yet within a moment of unrequested clarity the span of time vanishes into the brightess of last week or yesterday or just a few hours ago. We sometimes live in our memories and my memories are not a stranger and yet not to be afraid of either. Perhaps time has helped to bleed out much of the energy within these tangible thoughts and my life then and my life now have somehow merged into a definable realm. Not a bad place to be. Bill and so many others reside with in us. We try to live a part of our lives in honor of our fallen comrades. Bill Greenwell, rest in peaceful slumber.

4469. I thought the article "Three Days In May," written by Ben Crosby for the Fall 2012 issue of the " Cacti Times," was excellent and well written. There have been other articles written by him which I have found to be excellent and well written also. He has a true talent for writing. I was a member of Charlie Company 2/35th, which left Liz on May 22nd, and came back on May 30th. We operated from the South China Sea Beach and the Red Hill, when the three days was going on. If I'm correct, there was an awesome B-52 bombing in the Tan Phong area around May 31st, or shortly after that because it was very observable from Liz. I always felt very fortunate to have leaders such as Clinton Granger amd Ben Crosby and commend them for all they did for our battalion. When Richard Truesdell and I returned to Vietnam with our sons in January 2008, our guide throughout the trip was Truong Van Phong, the 2/35th ARVN interpreter who spent much time with Clinton and Ben. He praised them many times, during our trip, for their great intelligence, hard work and leadership. Rich and I couldn't have agreed more. Thanks, Clinton and Ben. The 25th Infantry Division Association, some time ago, had thought about writing a book on the 3rd Brigade of the 25th and 4th. Does anyone know how this project is going? 4465. Ted (as we called him) Winowitch attended Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia for only a year where as a upperclassman and his first sgt. I met him and became his friend. Even at his young age (15-16) Ted earned the respect not only of his classmates but of the upperclassmen as well. Of all the many souls I have known in my 73 years, Winowitch stands out in my memories of past friends as someone special. In closing, thank you Ted for your service and I for one shall always remember your sacrifice....God bless and keep you!

Battaliion 35th. infantry regiment Viet Nam War died in action on August 2nd, 1969. We at Leo want to honor his memory at our annual Alumni banquet coming up soon. This would have been David's 50th. anniversary from Leo and his class is coming from around the country over 100 strong. We cannot locate any family members and my brother JIm Furlong himself a Distinguished Service Cross recipient cannot locate a copy of the citatiion for Davids Silver Star. Jim has communicated with the Army but is getting no real help from them. Supposedly there was a fire at one of there records centers in the 1970's. 4456. SEARCHING for anyone that knew or served with my great uncle John Larry Jeffers during Vietnam with the RECON PLT, HHC, 2nd BN, 35th INFANTRY. Larry was KIA by small arms fire in July 25th 1967. Larry is the reason why I am serving my country. Even though I never met him, the stories that were told to me by my family made me realize that It was my calling to serve in our military. So fair am the only girl from my family that has joined. I am also the only one of the great grandchildren that have joined. Larry was taken from us at only 19 years old. I feel very proud to be carrying on his legacy and I think about him often. If anyone has any information please do not hesitate to email me. I would love to learn more about my great uncle. Thank you to all of you for serving the United States of America. Freedom would not be here without you and your sacrifices. Very Respectfully, SSgt Grace Smith, United States Air Force

4454. I cannot find the proper link to send this info so will relay it here. if there are any members of Bravo CO. 1/35th Nov. 13 1967 that are reading this they can confirm what I am saying to be accurate. I cannot confirm any of Dick Arnolds recollection of that day accept one important(at least to me)fact. This had to be second hand info on LT.Eisenhower and the other three K.I.A.s and how they died. i would think families would want to know, but maybe not. they were all on the ground securing that down chopper. I know this to be fact because i was there. I saw all four get zapped there. they were NOT shot down in a chopper. LT.IKE and the SSG. were in a hoocth to the left of my position facing the vill. an r.p.g. direct hit took out that hootch.that was the first contact we`d had all day after laying in the rain most of the day behind rice paddy dikes. they didn`t feel a thing. I think there were more men in there and maybe one more k.i.a. (the black headed boy). not sure but the blonde headed boy was in the paddys with the rest of us about three or four down on my left. The next thing that happened, within a couple of minutes was another r.p.g. came in and a direct hit on the downed chopper 25 or 50 meters directly behind us. That's when I was hit and so was the blond headed boy. He died instantly. others were wounded that day I think. The point to this story is that the four did not die getting shot down in they`re chopper. Tex was there. He knows too and so would anyone else that was there. after that we started taking on small arms fire from the vill. There's more but out of space. (SANDY)RTO 4DUECE

4444. The mailed version of the Cacti Times has been delayed a bit due to a computer glitch. The day after I finished this issue, my computer died. However, I had a master and the electronic version went out the next day. I took the print master to the printer the following day. Once I got the proof back, I noticed a couple items didn't translate from my master to the printer's software quite right so I had to recreate a couple pages to make the corrections, which ran us into the holiday schedule. The printer has now made the final changes and it should be on the press for printing. Hopefully it will be mailed out by the end of the week. My new desktop computer is in the mail and hopefully I will be able to "saddle-up" once again after reinstalling all my software. I apologize for the delay in the mailed version. I'm sure many of you are anxious to get the current issue but I think it will be worth the wait as it is one of our best with 44 pages that include the reunion recap and photos, a report from our active Cacti at Schofield Barracks and many great stories that our members have sent in, which make the Cacti Times both enjoyable and informative. Keep those stories coming; they are our history and legacy!

4442. My name is Greg Chapman. My father was Lt. Russ Chapman - leader of 3rd platoon, Co B, during the battles of 11-12 March and 21-22 March 1967. Over the years I've been in contact with many Cacti members through your website in an attempt to learn more about my father's experiences in Vietnam. He passed away in March of 1992, and like many Vets he was reluctant to talk much about Vietnam. I have been piecing together his movements during his tour through after action reports, battalion radio journals, decoration citations, and personal contacts for many years. Recently I read "One More Sunrise" by Curtis Gay. A particular passage in the book struck me, as I recollect my father talking about the jungle - when Gay stated that they never really knew where they were or where they were going from a geographic coordinate perspective.I had always wondered about the battles of March - exactly where they were fought. Recently, I spent some time converting the military UTM coordinates mentioned in the AA reports into Google Earth coordinates and plotting the battle of Plei Djereng on Google Earth. The output of this effort is fascinating. I can now see exactly the movements by Company. Using some of the Google Earth tools, such as "Street View", I can walk the same path as my father from the CO B LZ into the terrible ambush position where he lost several members of his platoon. I have created a file that can be emailed to you. I am proud and happy to make this information available to the brave guys that may not know exactly where in the jungle they fought and lost friends. I am confident that this is as accurate as can be given the coordinates mentioned in the after action reports - just to be sure, I cross checked several firebases, such as LZ Liz, and the coordinates were right on - placing me at the base of the two hills that comprised LZ Liz on Google Earth. When you open this file - and assuming you have Google Earth installed (free) - the battle area will show up both on the map and also a series of entries will be available in the Left Hand Nav column. When you click on the places, I've inserted the specific passages from the After Action reports to provide a type of timeline of activity associated with each pin drop location. The broad, semi square area is the "Sweep" area Co A was assigned, and is anchored by the 4 coordinates mentioned in the After Action report. You men of B/2/35 have my undying respect and admiration, as do all of our vets. Please email me with your email address and I will be happy to send this to you - all you need to do is download Google Earth, which is a free download - the file will then open. In the event that one of you guys might have pictures, stories, anecdotes, etc. about my father. I would welcome them.

4436. George D'Avignon passed on December 13th after an injury resulting from a fall. George was 1/35 Delta 6 from late August 1967 to April 15, 1968 when he was WIA and evacuated from Mile High with grevious wounds. George and I reconnected at the first Cacti reunion in 1999 and remained in touch throught the years. He was a very private and brave man who did his best and later silently battled his inner demons as so many of us have ours. Although I did not know him well I will miss him as he represented a part of history which resonates within every part of my being. God Bless you George and rest in peace.

4434. Last thursday we lost another hero. Our Capt.,George D'Avignon ret. major passed. He had been living for many years at the Naval marina in Key West,Fl. on a sailboat. He and I visited many times and we had a mini reunion at my place about 11 years ago in Melbourne ,Fl. Our platoon sgt. Bobby Settan along with his lady,Penny and Barrie "bloop" Wendell.his wife Patty, and Pete Pederson and my wife Debi.It was a hoot and I want to keep that memory in my heart and mind forever about the Capt.He served in Nam as an enlisted man in Special Forces prior to going back to the world and OCS and then making rank then we were very fortuate to get him as our C.O he tried to keep us safe but when the metal hit the meat he was right in the middle of it.He and Col.Taylar had a special bond as well,George thought very highly of Col. Bill and Dot.On April 15th 1968 at a place called Mileshigh we had a bad day and George was hit as he charged a 30 cal machine gunner 4 times as I recall and then as he was being taken back 1-2 more times by the bad guys tied up in the trees. We got them for him.How he survived that I will never know.Imagine my surprise after about 20 years passed he knocked on my door in Melbourne!!Is that you Captain? I have pix of that time and I am keeping on my desk to remember him.His ex contacted me and said Georges daughter was going to have a memorial for him in Key West in January.I will attend if possible. He had 1 speed, high speed GO!!I pray he is with God now in a much better place.

4425. I just happened to be off today and learned when I got my local paper that the small town next to mine was holding a first time ever Pearl Harbor commemoration ceremony. So at 9:00 am this morning I drove over to attend. A cold rain started just minutes before 9:00 am so approximately 50 of us huddled under umbrellas as the ceremony began. It really was a very nice ceremony. As I said, it was a small town and only 3 WWII men were in attendance but it was a very special morning. There were prayers and speeches and a wreath was committed to the Delaware river as the local VFW Lodge Color Guard provided a 21 rifle salute and Taps were played. So on this morning my thoughts turned to the heroes of my youth and especially to all of our Cacti WWII heroes. Thank you all for your service. Your generation will always be remembered by those of us who followed. Hand Salute! -- Doc Hall

4413. Today I had the privilege of flying on the same flight (Atlanta to Raleigh, NC) as Pfc James C Mullins as his remains were finally being returned home. He was KIA in South Korea in July of 1950 at the age of 21. I sat next to Master Sgt. Ryan Hampton who was accompanying him on this final journey. After landing the entire plane clapped in his honor. Upon exiting the plane and entering the airport, the entire airport window was filled with passengers ... in pure silence ... as they watched the Color Guard remove the casket. I felt very small as I watched the incredible sacrifice this young man made for our country. It was very moving. Our freedom was not free, but paid for through the selfless sacrifices of soldiers like James C Mullins. I will never forget. I would like to get a picture of this brave hero if I can. Please contact me at John.Andrzejek@gmail.com if you know where I can get one.

4412. Folks, we lost another very good man on the 18th of October. I heard from Kenny Vancil's (2nd platoon, D Comp, 1/35 1967-68) wife, Joni, that he died at the VA facility in Portland, OR. God speed, Kenny.

4411. In April 1967, as a First Lieutenant helicopter pilot, I was assigned to the 174th Assault Helicopter Company at Duc Pho, Republic of South Viet Nam. On 25 April 1967 I flew an "emergency resupply/medevac misson" for 1st Bn 35th Inf somewhere near Duc Pho, but I can't recall which company, the location or much else. I do remember we kept flying from late afternoon into the night taking ammo/C-rations into the LZ and bring out wounded and/or KIA. The fire fight while we flew into the location didn't let up. Later while stationed in Germany I was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for that 1/35th mission on 25 April 1967. My memory of that day, who I flew with, where the LZ was, who the men of the 1/35th were... is like a mystery. I know it happened, but I can't recall any of the details. I would like to know who, what, when, where all of this took place.I would certainly be appreciative if anyone in your associaiton could help. Thanks to you gentlemen for your service, welcome home and my God Bless each of you!/S/ COL (ret) Billy R. Wood

4410. Those of you who spent time at a nasty little place called LZ Ross in the middle of the Que Son Valley (aka Death Valley) in late 1967 - early 1968 may remember a totally denuded, bolder strewn, explosives cratered, sand bagged fortress that the Dinks regularly tried to overrun out in the middle of nowhere surrounded by rice paddies and mountains. I just ran across a web site that has pictures of it taken in 67-68, taken again in 2001, and again taken in 2010. The difference is astounding. It now has paved roads with curbs, sidewalks, lawns and landscaping, with modern looking buildings. Take a look at it at http://www.thecharlietigers.com/places.html It's under the places tab

4408. With the Denver reunion a fond memory, it is once again time to begin thinking about 2013 dues. They are due and payable now, it's not necessary to wait. Another thought: A Life Membership makes a great Christmas gift, from someone close, or it makes a long-lasting gift for yourself with all that holiday cash. (Installments can be arranged, but ALL payments must be made in the same year.)The renewal or Life Membership form can be found on this website, or in any publication of the Cacti Times. You can also direct that some, or all of your estate be bequeathed to our great Association. Just let your heirs know your wishes. Your gift can be earmarked in your name to one or several of our programs: Schlarships, Cacti Monument, etc. Or, if you prefer, the funds can be left in the name of anyone you wish. Contact me, or anyother of the Officers and we'll be glad to help with the details.

4407. SEARCHING! for anyone who knew PFC WILFREDO MERCADO-SANTOS Alpha Company, 2nd Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment. I think he was an asst. machine gunner. He was also called "Freddy" and he was killed by friendly fire in the Binh Dinh Province of Vietnam on April 11, 1967. From an old newspaper clipping my mother gave me, my father was killed with two other soldiers. My name is Doreen Mercado and I am the daughter he never knew. Any information or pics of my dad would be greatly appreciated.

4405. This was my second reunion and what a great feeling to walk among HEROES!!!! The funny thing is you don't even realize that you are. I never knew my dad because he was killed exactly one month after I was born. I came with the broken heart of a little girl, but it is healed by each of you. As much as each one of you have helped me to heal, my hope for you is this: By seeing me, and meeting me that I have given you a way to let your guilt go. This was the one thing that I heard over and over again. Your Cacti brothers would not want you to feel this way. It's easy for me to say and harder for you to do, but together we can heal. You didn't get your hero's welcome so long ago, but I want to say "Welcome Home and God Bless each of you" It is truly my honor to meet you and to know you. With all my respect,Kimberly Massine Rankin, daughter of Richard P Massine KIA Nov. 20 1966

4404. Got home last night from the Denver Reunion. What a great time, we had a ball. The hotel was great, Doc Johnson did really good. My brother & sister in law attended for the first time. They where very impressed with the Saturday night activities & all the great people. They couldn't believe how close we are for serving together so long ago.

4403. I want to thank everyone for your gracious welcome to my wife Jaci and myself at the reunion this year. It was my first. There are no words to express my feelings. You guys know what great therapy it is/was so maybe no words are necessary. Meeting Dave Manrique (Pancho) face to face was one of the most emotional moments of my life. After so so many years thinking he didn't make it. I have been battling the "Beast" for a long time. When Dick Arnold told me some time ago that it is a brotherhood and when I walked in I would understand, I really didn't understand, but I do now.I am in intense PET therapy now, but the reunion was the one "missing piece of the puzzle". Once again I thank each and every one of you. The Cacti are indeed Brothers and we'll see you all in Virginia Beach next year. Mike

4402. Thank you all for your attendance at our 14th Annual Reunion in Denver. You have made this event another powerful happening. Without you, we would not be the most sucessful Regimental Association that exists. If you were there, you realise what it means to be a Cacti. If you were not there, we missed you but did not forget you. For our KIA family and friends, we hope that we were able to answer your queries. For our seven Active soldiers from Hawaii that attended, we stand so proud for your service as a Cacti and your endurance overseas. We look forward to Virginia Beach VA come next September with pride and anticipation. Please spread the word with your Cacti brothers how fulfilling a reunion can be. CACI FOREVER!!
